"CHRONICLE" A film by Josh Trank- I will have spoilers marked **SPOILER**. I first off would like to state that... I hate the youth of today- I wanted to kill everyone in the theater today, for they wouldnt shut up. Dumb [foo foo]s were laughing their assess off and carrying on their own conversations during the WHOLE movie- hate them- I hope they die.
Now! "CHRONICLE" A story about a guy, Andrew, who has an ACTUAL hard life at home- his father is a drunk who beats him daily and deems him worthless and his mother is dying. He has no friends- aside from his cousin Matt, after meeting his soon to be new friend Steve, the three of them discover a mysterious "Thing" That grants them special abilities, such as telekinesis, invincibility, and flight. As they have fun with their new found powers, Andrew starts to channel his abusive life through using the powers and releases the monster inside of him.
I REALLY enjoyed this movie, I REALLY enjoyed the shit out of this movie, just REALLY enjoyed it, REALLY. A common story arc in Hollywood nowadays is the sympathetic "Villain" This is put into effect in this film- and boy does it work, you really feel bad for Andrew, how terrible his life is. Seeing how shitty his father is (His dad is a worthless piece of shit, I will elaborate later) To seeing how sick his mother is, seeing him get bullied at school just to top it off. You get a real connection with the character, as I did, I really felt him- I felt bad, there is no reason someone should have to go through ANY of what he does on a daily basis. In fact, its when he gets his powers and starts spending time with Matt and Steve- Andrew is as happy as a kid in a candy store, he never stops smiling, he laughs, he is actually enjoying life for once. You get a sense of this happiness when he asks straight out at one point to Matt, his cousin, "Do you like me?" When he gets a simple, "Yes"- You can hear how happy he is. That is also why it is so sad to see all of that go away during the final act of the film, to see this kid who had this shitty life turned into gold and then have that taken away within a blink of an eye. Josh Trank did an incredible job at writing this movie, the characters, story, dialogue, just everything- was top-notch, beauty! The actors in this film were incredible, they gave a solid performance that could convince even the most dense of viewers that something was going on in the background.
Getting away from story and into visuals. The visuals in this film were spectacular- the way everything looked was so smooth and clear, very cool. One scene in particular that I feel I have to mention is the flight scene- when they first start to fly... that scene was AMAZING to watch, everything looked incredible- playing football in the sky- thats a win. Even to a scene as simple as Andrew walking down a sidewalk, we see the water from earlier rain be pushed from his feet- it flows so smooth, its beautiful. Of course leaving it at the entire final act of the film, a **SPOILER** Fight a will never forget, the big battle in the skies- buses being tossed, people flying through the streets, cars blowing into pieces. Helicopters falling from the skies, buildings being ripped apart through pure energy and brute rage, everything about the final act just impresses the shit out of me and is just simply awesome **END SPOILER**.
Now jumping back onto the story quickly here. As I said you will feel sorry for Andrew, well you will also get some happiness during a point in the film where he **SPOILER** Gets revenge against his dad **END SPOILER** Its a very incredible moment, that gave me chills. Also getting back to the dad, how I said he is a piece of shit- well, he is. There is a point is the film, during the final act **SPOILER** Andrews mother dies, Andrew was trying to get money to save her, he gets hurt and is in the hospital. His dad comes in while Andrew is in a "Coma" His dad basically blames Andrew for her dying, not his own neglect to take care of her like a good husband. He demands that Andrew say he is sorry for making his mother die- now if that doesnt piss you off and hate his dad... you suck as a human being **END SPOILER**. With all of that though, comes the incredible final act of the film that really shows you true human potential put to the ultimate test.
"CHRONICLE" Was a movie that is much better than it seems. The whole "Found Footage" Style of film making is brought to new levels in this film, using his telekinesis, Andrew can control the camera- so it isnt shaky. Plus, its not a found footage ordeal, its just showing what someones camera is seeing, you see through multiple cameras throughout the film. One scene in particular during the final act- Andrew grabs all of the cameras from peoples hands to film his "Alpha Predator" Moment- you see from these incredible angles, from every direction. The shots are mind blowing and... I just love them, LOVE them- so good.
"CHRONICLE" Impressed me beyond what I was expecting, I knew it would be good, but it was better- it really made me think again about how these types of movies play out, I would DEFINITELY see this again. This film is a MUST SEE, exceptional- absolutely outstanding, I dont know how else to put it- this movie was AWESOME!! It was.
I give "CHRONICLE" A powerful 10/10 Americas! GO SEE THIS MOVIE, SOON.
