DUNE: THE SISTERHOOD Director Johan Renck And Star Shirley Henderson Have Parted Ways With The Series

Dune: The Sisterhood has been in production since last November, but HBO Max's prequel series has now hit a roadblock, with director Johan Renck and Star Shirley Henderson parting ways with the show.

Dune: The Sisterhood, HBO Max's planned prequel spin-off of Denis Villeneuve's big-screen sci-fi adaptations, began production late last year, but the project has now hit a not insignificant roadblock.

Chernobyl executive producer Johan Renck, who had been tapped to direct the first two episodes, has now exited the project along with star Shirley Henderson, who set to play one of the lead roles of Tula Harkonnen.

Filming is reportedly on pause for seven months as replacements are sought.

As Dune: The Sisterhood (wt) has entered a pre-scheduled hiatus, there are some creative changes being made to the production in an effort to create the best series possible and stay true to the source material,” a spokesperson tells Deadline. “Johan Renck has completed his work on the series and a new director will be brought on; through mutual agreement, Johan is moving on to pursue other projects. Additionally, Shirley Henderson will be exiting the series and will no longer be playing Tula Harkonnen.”

Though no official reason was given, sources indicate that Renck's "auteur approach did not jibe with the streamer’s vision for the series and was a departure from the look of Denis Villeneuve’s films."

It's unclear if Henderson stepping away is related to this, but the trade notes that the delay is "wreaking havoc on actors’ schedules, creating potential conflicts that may lead to more exits and recastings."

Dune: The Sisterhood, based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, is set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides. It follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.

The cast also includes Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen; Indira Varma as Empress Natalya; Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez; Shalom Brune Franklin as Mikaela; Faoileann Cunningham as Sister Jen; Aoife Hinds as Sister Emeline; Chloe Lea as Lila; Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart; Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino; Jade Anouka as Sister Theodosia; Chris Mason as Keiran Atreides.

Lara Pulver would be a good replacement for Shirley Henderson.

Lots of excellent actors.

And the new Dune movie was boring as sh!t. Someone needs to be fed to the wood chipper for this.

Is there a clamoring for these films/shows that we aren’t aware of?

$165 mil budget & $402 mil box office for the 2021 don’t really scream a demand for an extended universe.

Anybody know why WB is pursuing this more than something like Harry Potter which would be a guaranteed success?

@maxx - They basically had to guarantee Villeneuve a sequel in exchange for the simultaneous HBO Max release. Why the expanded Universe? Critics were big on the movie, and they probably spent good money on the IP and everything has to be an expanded universe nowadays, studios love chasing after that Marvel money in any and every way they can.

They tried 3 times to work in the Harry Potter world with Fantastic Beasts and where pretty committed to doing 5 of those until the 3rd 1 massively underperformed, which showed Harry Potter isn't a guaranteed success.

Hard to believe they're so committed to making this weirdas show, about the creation of a coven of eugenics obsessed witches that sort-of shadow rules the Empire, work that they would postpone it for 7 months rather than pull the plug at this point after burning too much money.
