From Deadline..

Relavity Media is in talks with director Antoine Fuqua and Gerard Butler to come aboard Afterburn, an adaptation of the Red 5 Comic title by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood. The scifi saga takes place a year after a solar flare burns half the surface of a planet, and treasure hunters return to retrieve what's left of value.

Fuqua is probably best known for Training Day, that being by far his best film at any rate! Although he has also directed the recently released Brooklyn's Finest which is receiving good reviews. I'm sure no one here needs an introduction to Butler, who did a great job as Leonidas is 300. True his profile has fallen(at least with CBM fans) since, but this may get him back on track. The original script was written by Matt Johnson(Torque), but apparently Christian Gudegast(A Man Apart) is now on board for a rewrite. I'm not liking the sound of that to be honest. Anyway, the film will be produced by Neal Moritz, Tobey Maguire, Toby Jaffe and Jenno Topping. And if you are unfamiliar with the comic, here is a quick synopsis..

“Afterburn,” a sci-fi adventure based on books published by Red 5 Comics, is set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels while facing rival hunters, mutants and pirates.

Ew...the guy that wrote Torque?

"We can't got to the cops."
"Why not?"
"Because." *awkward blank stare*

Not verbatim, but you get the gist...Worst. Writing. Ever.

Thank god they got someone to rewrite. How do people that do crap work get another job in Hollywood? It's like Uwe Boll directing a third Bloodrayne or Megan Fox doing anything outside of Transformers.
