Zack Snyder has released a first look at his next movie Rebel Moon. The Justice League and Watchmen helmer co-wrote the screenplay alongside Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300), and will also step into the director's chair for the Netflix-based project.
The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighbouring planets to help them make a stand.
The concept art below appears to show us that colony, and it immediately looks like Rebel Moon has the makings of an epic sci-fi blockbuster.
Snyder was once rumoured to be developing a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, but he's since confirmed that the concept he came up with will form the basis of Rebel Moon. It's certainly an intriguing-sounding project and one that looks set to be a departure from what we've seen from the filmmaker before now. While he has dabbled in sci-fi, this promises to be his first full foray into that genre.
As Snyder notes, production begins in the next few months, so we should start to see more from this one - including casting news - shortly. We're definitely expecting a mix of newcomers and "SnyderVerse" regulars based on the ensemble he put together for Army of the Dead, anyway.
