JUSTICE LEAGUE Director Zack Snyder To Helm Kurosawa-Inspired Sci-Fi Film REBEL MOON For Netflix

Well, it looks like Justice League director Zack Snyder will get to make his Seven Samurai-inspired space movie after all - though it'll be set in a different galaxy far, far away! More past the jump...

Zack Snyder has often said that if he was given the opportunity to helm a Star Wars movie, he'd pay homage to the great Akira Kurosawa with a Seven Samurai-inspired space adventure. Well, it looks like the Justice League director got tired of waiting for Lucasfilm to come calling, because he's taken his idea to Netflix.

THR reports that Snyder's next project for the streamer will be an epic sci-fi fantasy titled Rebel Moon, which he will also co-write with Army of the Dead scribe Shay Hatten and 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad.

The plot revolves around "a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy which is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand."

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” said Snyder. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

“I’ve been working on this on the side for so long, it’s pretty far along,” he added.

Snyder will produce alongside his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder via the duo’s Stone Quarry. Production is expected to kick-off early next year.

I like it for that the premise sounds rather simple, but knowing Snyder he's probably gonna introduce tons of unnecessary distractions for the sake of "hey this is cool, I should use that"

So it seems he finally gets to make his star wars samurai project. That's pretty cool, looking forward to it.

I always feel like when people say they're doing a Kurosawa inspired film they've probably just watched Seven Samurai and Yojimbo. The guy had a 50+ year career, he directed everything from crime thrillers to social dramas and comedies.

It's like saying you're gonna do a Ridley Scott inspired film, what does that even mean? Just say you're doing a samurai film in space.

@rexlincoln - No kidding. Seems like it's shorthand for "chanbara". One of Kurosawa's greatest films was Ikiru. No samurai or blood.

@rexlincoln - THIS

HIS BEST FILMS aren’t his samurai films. His best imo is The Bad Sleep Well

Perfect film

@rexlincoln - with Snyder I do actually think he saw most of Kurosawa's repertoire. Dude's a real cinephile from what I gather.

Maybe Stephen Dorff should ask Snyder for a role in this. Since they both appear to love more classic movies.

@bkmeijer - I've made my feelings on Snyder clear before. I like his other films outside of his attempts at Superman, Batman, etc. They're fun watches but I really don't think he's smart enough to be called a cinephile. I reckon he likes a lot of classic movies but he comes across as mentally 12. Again, 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch are good watches but pretty dumb.

As for Stephen Dorff, he just comes across as a prick. You can like classic movies and not completely trash other types of film. As Paul Thomas Anderson said, don't be a film snob.

@BlackBeltJones - I love The Bad Sleep Well. I'd also rate One Wonderful Sunday, the Drunken Angel and High and Low as some of my favourites.

You should check out Masaki Kobayashi if you haven't seen any of his films.

I’ve heard of Kobayashi but never watched one of his films. I’ll put it on the list

His last effort that had a group cast was awful and it's Netflix so I expect it will be more of the same.

Sounds like he’s one of those Kurosawa fans who’ve only watched his samurai films.

Samurai Samurai in space. This has kind of been done in a way already. Obviously this is more of a space opera

Samurai 7 put a sci fi spin on the original movie

@MUTO123 - This is a great B Movie. If Snyder can make his film fun like this, he could have something great on his hands. But Snyder doesn't really do "fun" (since Dawn, which did have its lighter moments in a dark, dark world).
