Legendary has announced that filming is now officially underway on Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus director Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which may not actually be the final title of the sequel to Gareth Edwards' reboot.

Accompanying this news is our first plot synopsis for the studio's third MonsterVerse movie, which confirms that the giant beasts hinted at in the post-credits scene of Kong: Skull Island will indeed be making an appearance:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Starring Zhang Ziyi, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Ken Watanabe, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Aisha Hinds, Godzilla 2 is set to stomp into theaters on March 22, 2019.

Also, for anyone who cares:

Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include “War Dogs” and “Godzilla,” for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”); editor Roger Barton (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the “Transformers” films); costume designer Louise Migenbach (the “X-Men” and “Hangover” films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (“Godzilla,” “Ghost in the Shell,” and part of the Oscar-winning team behind “Life of Pi ”).

I agree. This could end up being an epic monster showdown that gets fans hyped for Kong vs. Godzilla.

Here's classic Godzilla compared to 2014 Godzilla. This can give us an idea of what Ghidorah's redesign will look like. I imagine it will be mostly faithful to the original, but modernised.

Like this three-headed Dragon in the new Transformers movie... just possibly without the front legs;

I feel bad that, over the course of the last few months, Kong really didn't leave a great impression on me like I thought it would. It was sort of okay, to me. I still enjoy Godzilla a great deal more, and I'm looking forward to this and the crossover for sure.

But man... always weird that I constantly go against the grain with the perception of certain entertainment.

@MarsivNayr - your not alone. Kong is a awful film in regards of character development and narrative, BUT they actually got Kong himself so right that I need to see him again. IMO.
