GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Creature Designer Reveals Some Monstrous Alternate Takes On King Ghidorah

Some newly revealed concept art from Godzilla: King of the Monsters shows us just how different the villainous King Ghidorah could have looked in the 2019 movie, and this take might give you nightmares.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was unleashed in 2019 to mostly mixed reviews, but it set the stage for the next chapter in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong. In that, the previous movie's villainous Kaiju, King Ghidorah, returned as the consciousness of Mecha-Godzilla, a surprisingly smart idea that allowed this beast to take one more crack at laying its greatest foe to waste.

Fans remain optimistic that we could eventually see Mecha-King Ghidorah, of course, but with Godzilla's big screen future something of a mystery to us, it's tough to say whether that will happen.

Ghidorah, who obviously has a storied history outside of the MonsterVerse, will return somewhere down the line, and we just hope creature designer Ken Barthelmey is involved when he does. The artist recently took to Twitter to share some unused designs from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, showcasing a downright terrifying take on the monster emphasising its dragon-like appearance.

Beauty and the Beast star Dan Stevens was recently cast in this franchise's next instalment, though we don't expect to see Ghidorah there as the rumoured plan is to focus on Kong's son. That suggests a futuristic setting, though very little has been revealed about the project.

Take a closer look at this awesome King Ghidorah concept art below:

Definitely a Sam Raimi style for Ghidorah

I enjoy Godzilla: King of the Monsters much more than GvK - better cinematography, CGI, scarier monster scenes (King Ghidorah) and overall a much more enjoyable experience for me.

Fight me.

Heads give me eel vibes. It's honestly a pretty cool design that fits in well with what Godzilla (2014) did for Godzilla, taking a different approach to the look & feel of the character while still keeping it recognizable, which worked really well for that movie.

Even so, I love that they went with a classic look for Ghidorah and the other monsters in G:KotM, it felt incredible seeing them come to life after the puppets and scaly suits of yesteryear.

Definitely a cool design. I love the thicker more muscular neck. Ghidorah's necks in the film looked pretty delicate.

Too much sea monster in that design. Man, would I have loved to like KotM more than I did. Skull Island remains my favourite movie from this 'Verse. Haven't watched GvK, though.

So happy to see the KOTM love in this thread. The cinematography and kaiju and lore alone elevate this film immensely. Never understood the love for GvK which is, to me, my least favorite of all the Monsterverse films.

These have technically been out for what, two years, maybe more by now?
Anyway, I'm glad they went with an update of the traditional design, MonsterVerse Ghidorah looked great. Shame they killed him in his first movie.

Great crappy movie. Totally underrated. Bradley Whitford is so good in this. And that helicopter escape scene at the end is so unintentionally funny....
