Joe Manganiello In Talks To Join Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's RAMPAGE Video Game Movie

Joe Manganiello is in talks to join "The Rock" in New Line's film adaptation of the classic '80s arcade game, Rampage. What does this mean for his role as Deathstroke in Ben Affleck's Batman movie?

With Ben Affleck's Batman movie in trouble and potentially looking at a page one rewrite, Joe Manganiello is looking to secure another role in the interim. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Manganiello is entering final contract negotiations to co-star in Dwayne Johnson and director Brad Peyton's adaptation of '80s arcade game, Rampage.  THR describes the film as following:

"Like the video game, the film will feature three creatures - a monstrously transformed gorilla,
crocodile and wolf - who wreak havoc on North American cities and landmarks. Johnson is, naturally, an animal-loving hero who is the world’s only hope."

Also in talks to join the film is Marley Shelton, who is best known for the Anthony Hopkins thriller Solace.  Manganiello will reportedly play the leader of a private military group, while Shelton will play a scientist/astronaut.

In addition to The Rock, Naomie Harris is also starring in the film as a geneticist.

The film is currently slated for release on  April 20, 2018, meaning that cameras will likely begin rolling this Spring, the same time that Ben Affleck's Batman film was originally expected to begin shooting. We speculated last week that Manganiello's role as Deathstroke was up in the air following numerous reports of script issues and this latest casting news certainly supports that theory.

@DJRock93 - Yeah because people do not do multiple films......or have films back to back.

@JoeMomma29 - Not saying he can't, it's just looking like he won't lol

@JoeMomma29 - He very could still be Deathstroke, it really depends on whether the new director and screenwriter are going off the script Affleck and Beal already wrote or if it's a page one rewrite. At the very least, this pretty much confirms that the film is delayed, although it never had an official release date to begin with.

Connect some DOTS!

- Warner Bros. is doing the DCEU and Rampage
- Affleck's Script is burning in a fireplace somewhere.

- New Director to be announced soon.
- New Director is going to start Batman from Ground Zero (Good!)

- Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke is no longer 100% lock to be in New Batman Movie with new Script.

- Warner Bros. is giving Manganiello this as a make up call OR keeping him around so he can still be used in DCEU later down the road.

Not a coincidence that the speculation is a brand new Batman script is on the way and then BOOM! Joe Manganiello is suddenly signed up for a different Warner Bros. property.

Consider Deathstroke a 50/50 at best for 'The Batman'.

@IronGenesis - I consider Ben Affleck 25/75 to continue as Batman at this point.

@ForDarkseid - i don't know that i would be upset if Ezra Miller rebooted the universe with some Speed Force magic and when Miller returned to the present suddenly Bruce Wayne was played by...someone else. lol.

Yeah, I'm thinking he's out as Deathstroke.
Man, Affleck really f.ucked everything up by trying to do too much.

@Battabing - I don't think he purposefully tried to do too much, I think WB was like do this do it! do it! do it!!!

@azimiq - No, I think WB was fine with him wearing all those hats until the last movie he directed, wrote, produced, and starred in crashed and burned and lost them $75M.

But, even from interviews you could see Affleck was starting to crack. He just has too much on his plate.

WB/DC needs to gett their filming schedule down, before actors start taking other jobs. case in point.

So The Batman solo is definitely not shooting this Spring then...
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 2/9/2017, 2:39 PM
@ComicsBornAndBred - for sure not happening. With a new director who is going to re-write the whole script? no way.

But again...rather have a guy like Reeves have the time to develop a new story than fly into production on a middling affleck script that cannot be saved.

but now it looks like

June 2017 - WW
November 2017 - JL
October 2018 - Aquaman

Nothing really they could materialize quick enough for a May 2017 release date. Unless! They rolled out a very simple Batman or Gotham City Sirens movie. and by simple i mean...a straight Detective Noir batman film or a very CGI limited Sirens movie.

@IronGenesis - so we're gonna be taking it slow, getting one film a year for a bit. Fine by me. I'd be down to get MOS 2 (doubt it but ya never know) before The Batman.
IronGenesis
IronGenesis - 2/9/2017, 3:00 PM
@ComicsBornAndBred - MOS 2 would work also, because so much of the decisions have already been made. You have your cast, you have your *gulp* director, you know what Metropolis is, what Smallville Is, The Universe has been "Established".

That's why I think Sirens could also go quick if you kept it small.

Gotham, Harley, Joker, Gordon, Batman, GPD...all designs that are already made. Saves time in my opinion.

Now Ayer just needs to gut out all the CGI crap and keep it simple. Gangsters, Practical Effects...some Batman Rogue Gallery Appearances.

Realistically the only insane special effects should be for Poison Ivy when she goes off her rocker.

Get rid off Ben Affleck before we lose our Deathstroke and more potential films get delayed in favor of The Batman.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 2/9/2017, 2:39 PM
I'm guessing Deathstroke may not even be a part of The Batman anymore. Who knows what new vision this fresh director concocts. It'll probably be determined by Batman's arc in JL though, that's for sure.
