While we're only a little over a month away from seeing John Boyega in one highly anticipated epic, we'll have to wait a bit longer to see the British actor in the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 film Pacific Rim.
Pacific Rim Uprising, directed by former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, hits theatres in March 2018, and Boyega recently talked with Empire for their feature on the new movie. Boyega shared some new details on his character, Jake Pentecost, son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost. Based on his comments, Jake is nothing like Boyega's character in the Star Wars films. Boyega said:
“At the start of the film, he is an absolute crook...There are rogue Jaegers where people have collected spare parts and made their own machines. Jake is stealing from people and selling Jaeger parts."
While this character sounds nothing like Finn, Boyega has experience playing more edgy characters as well. His breakout film, Attack the Block, saw Boyega playing a tough London teenager named Moses.
Boyega went on to talk about the difficult nature of the new movie's filming, adding that he had to "slide down a Jaeger arm from top to bottom," falling about 20 feet.
Pacific Rim Uprising also stars Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Lan Yingying, Qian Yongchen and Zhang Jin. Returning cast members include Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman.
Kikuchi, who played Mako Mori in the original film, is rumored to be playing one of the leaders of the Jaeger Program this time around, possibly taking over Stacker Pentecost's old job.
