Klara And The Sun Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed — Taika Waititi And Jenna Ortega's Sci-Fi Flops With Critics

The reviews are in for Klara and the Sun, but Thor: Love and Thunder writer-director Taika Waititi has delivered another movie that's being panned for relying too heavily on comedy.

Based on the bestselling novel by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro and written and directed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), Klara and the Sun introduces audiences to Klara (Jenna Ortega), an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home.

When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Amy Adams), and they've suffered great loss, but Klara's innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie's complicated world.

Waititi once had the makings of becoming Hollywood's most in-demand filmmaker. After delivering indie hits like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, he made his blockbuster debut with Thor: Ragnarok. The movie reinvented the God of Thunder for the MCU and received rave reviews, and it wasn't long until Lucasfilm enlisted him for episodes of The Mandalorian and a now-unmade Star Wars movie.

He followed Thor: Ragnarok with the controversial but well-received Jojo Rabbit, only to go off the rails with Thor: Love and Thunder. The 2022 movie was widely considered a disappointment by fans and even prompted actor Chris Hemsworth to acknowledge that such a strong comedic tone was not the right fit for the Avenger.

Waititi attempted to bounce back with Next Goal Wins, but after it received 46% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed critics had soured on the filmmaker. Now, there's more bad news, as Klara and the Sun has debuted on the review aggregator with a "Rotten" 20% score.

As we explained on SFFGazette.com, reviews are overwhelmingly negative, with several 1* verdicts, including The Guardian. The site writes, "Taika Waititi detonates an explosion of postmodern quirkiness and ironic dorkiness in this unbearably mannered, unspeakably acted film."

The Times concurs, noting, "It’s a hopeless film, slippery and mendacious, full of gross Hallmark sentiment, and has been bettered by a myriad of previous robot companion flicks." The Daily Telegraph echoes those Thor: Love and Thunder complaints by stating, "It’s hard to fathom what Waititi thought he was doing in playing things for laughs."

Deadline was also unimpressed. "Klara And The Sun just doesn’t deliver on any of the fronts it promises," the trade explains. "Instead, we’re faced with a sporadically funny meditation on life and premature death that... can’t quite capture the subtleties of speculative literary sci-fi."

Screen International gave it a (mostly) positive review, at least, concluding, "Strong performances and imaginative visuals help to make it an engaging fairytale with a distinctive otherworldly tone -- but something is lost by widening the story beyond Klara’s tight perspective."

Directed by Taika Waititi and written by Waititi and Dahvi Waller, Klara and the Sun is based on the book by Kazuo Ishiguro. Produced by David Heyman, Garrett Basch, and Waititi, the executive producers include Gary Barber, Alex G. Scott, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison, and Kazuo Ishiguro.

Starring Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, and Aran Murphy, with Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne, Klara and the Sun arrives in theaters on October 23.

Genuinely had no idea Waititi was the director behind this until now. Hasn't been on a great run, has he?

@NHartMusic - nope, he peaked about 10 years ago and then went on a one man crusade to make everything so stupid that he tanked his own career

Love to see Taika taking another L tbh. Dude sounds like such an egotistical bastard and needs to really understand what made him great in the early days to get back to that.. if they let him lol

So many poorly made movies getting wide releases and yet Wildwood, an obvious future classic and probably the best movie of the year is only getting a limited release.

You'd be lucky to find a showing of it.

I never understood the draw with Taika. He seems full of himself, but there is no real reason why he should be.

Man, Waititi has really struggled to recapture the What We Do in the Shadows, Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbit run.

Jojo Rabbit is controversial? First time that I hear about this. I enjoyed it a lot and it's my one and only favorite film from himn, a well-balanced story that knew when to be funny and when to be serious without over doing it. That's the Waititi that I was hoping to see more of forward. Unfortunately it appears he has a major flaw in terms of adapting things that are not non-comic book since he made an unnecessary change in Next Goal Wins that cost him a lot.

Ironically, Thor: Ragnarok has aged a bit well for me compared to when it first came out. I still prefer the 1st one but I am no longer so bothered by Ragnarok. But then he went to Love and Thunder joking when Sif lost an arm and how her severed limb would reach Valhalla first and then killing Jane Foster right after bringing her back was definitely choices that have costed him.

Some insiders are saying that the reason he could be failing like this is because he no longer is working with his lifetime collaborator that produced and edited his movies, his wife. That should be more thoroughly researched.

And BTW this isn't just an L for Waititi but also for Jenna Ortega. Besides the two Screams movies she's done the rest of her filmography hasn't fared any better. This is also her lowest rated project which kinda sucks because it looks like a breath of fresh air for her to work after playing the monotonous dark comedic Wednesday. (Also her best rated work)

Perhaps this best-selling novel should've been adapted as a TV series.

@NinnesMBC - i did not know that about his wife , that could be a reason atleast.

I have a more positive opinion then most on Love & Thunder but i think he needs someone to rein him in at times and he might not have that anymore.

That sucks since i thought the trailer made the movie look decent imo…

I still might give it a shot eventually but oh well!!.
