MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Star Tom Cruise Will Head To International Space Station For Upcoming Sci-Fi Movie

We've known for some time now that Tom Cruise plans to head into outer space (for real!), but Universal Pictures' chief has now better explained what the daredevil actor has planned with Doug Liman...

With space travel now becoming somewhat more practical (provided you're a multi-millionaire), it's really not too surprising that movie studios are looking to cash in on the gimmick. Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise is very keen to head into the cosmos and is already plotting a potential blockbuster set in outer space with his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman.

The idea was first mooted back in 2020 during the pandemic, and with the worst of that behind us, it appears the project is finally beginning to gain steam at Universal Pictures.

Talking to BBC (via SFFGazette.com), studio boss Donna Langley shared a promising update on the project.

"Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He's taking the world to space," she explained. "That's the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."

Langley also revealed that while most of the action takes place on Earth, some late-minute heroics will be what leads to Cruise travelling to the International Space Station in order for his character to, obviously, "save the day."

It's hard not to be intrigued by what Liman and Cruise have planned. While space travel can quite easily be created using visual effects (look no further than Gravity or, uh, Star Wars for proof of that), moviegoers are bound to be intrigued by seeing the real thing, especially with an A-Lister like Cruise once again putting his neck on the line for his biggest stunt yet.

The untitled movie doesn't have a release date, and there's no word on when cameras will start rolling. The project appears close to becoming a reality, though, and Universal is clearly looking to make history by sending Cruise into space.

We’ve heard rumors of stars going to space to shoot movies since 2014. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Instead of asking if you could, that should've asked themselves if they should. This is stupid. Stop wasting money on rich people doing stupid things. Leave space travel to the astronauts and scientists who take this shit seriously. Get in front of your green or blue screen, Tom, and try acting like your get launched into space.
