MOONFALL: Check Out The First Trailer For Roland Emmerich's New Sci-Fi Disaster Movie

The first trailer for Lionsgate's Moonfall is now online, and it promises the usual Earth-in-peril thrills and melodrama we've come to expect from Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich.

The plot deals with the aftermath of the moon being knocked from its orbit by a mysterious force and set on a collision course with Earth. A team is then assembled and sent on a perilous mission to land on the lunar surface and save the planet.

Patrick Wilson (Aquaman) plays a disgraced former NASA astronaut whose last mission, which ended in tragedy, holds a clue about the impending catastrophe. Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire) has been cast as his teenage son. Halle Berry (John Wick Chapter 3) is playing an astronaut-turned-NASA administrator who is a former colleague of Wilson's character, while Josh Gad (Frozen) will portray the eccentric genius who deduces that the moon is heading right for Earth.

Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games) and Eme Ikwuakor (Inhumans) will also appear in undisclosed roles.

This looks... like a Roland Emmerich movie! If that's your thing, the trailer should have the desired effect.

“With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Academy Award winner Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley), believe her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.”

Moonfall is set to hit theaters on February 4, 2022.

Solid cast but disaster movies died out for me in the 2000s.

I really enjoy these dumb looking apocalypse movies. Only movies where scientific inaccuracies make the plot even more fun. I'll check this out

Also, why do I have the feeling eccentric genius is used here as a term for a conspiracy theorist. And if that's the case, I'm not sure it sends the right message about how conspiracy theorists are right (just like with GvK).

And it kinda looks like aliens are involved too. Bet that's no moon, but a space station.

Why is he obsessed with the apocalypse?

Emmerich, Paul WS Anderson, Snyder... They keep making garbage that no one cares but the studios keep giving them millions of dollars to make trash. It´s quiet fascinating.

I never trusted the moon. I hope this film shows the moon for what it really is, and in a way The Darkside of the Moon promised to expose, but never did.

There's probably gonna be half a dozen little side characters that keep showing up which we have no sympathy for, but are supposed to care for immensely. Not his movie, but he always adds characters like the Russian family in Whedon's Justice League.
