The Hollywood Reporter reports that Octavia Spencer - who was recently nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category for The Help - has been cast in Bong Joon-Ho's upcoming sci-fi indie film Snow Piercer, based loosely on the French graphic novel Le Transperceniege. She joins Chris Evans, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton in the film, in addition to Korean actor Kang Ho Song, who worked with Joon-Ho before. Below is a plot summary for the film:

Snow Piercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.

Spencer's character is described as "a passenger on the train who joins the revolt in order to save her son.". She begins filming for Snow Piercer at the end of April. The film is scheduled to be released sometime in 2013.
