Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato is now a Live Action Movie

Do you remember the anime cartoon from the late 70's and early 80's?

I remember this one. The cartoon has lasted several incarnations, including big screen adaptations in Japan. It was called "Space Battleship Yamato" in Japan but when it came to the States it was renamed "Star Blazers".

In the series the year is 2199 and Earth is facing extinction due to radioactive pollution from the Gamilons. The Queen of planet Iscandar promises the Earthlings a solution if they can reach her planet which lies 148,000 light years away. They have just one year to do this and make a return to Earth before its too late. As one could probably guess, the Gamilons cause many obstacles on the journey.

According to a Wikipedia post:
Star Blazers was the first popular English-translated anime that had an over-arching plot and storyline that required the episodes to be shown in order. It dealt with somewhat more mature themes than other productions aimed at the same target audience at the time. As a result, it paved the way for future arc-based, plot-driven anime translations.

This was the show that got America started on anime.

Here is the original English intro

The movie seems to be spot on! It remains to be seen how much they will follow the original story line. "Space Battleship Yamato" looks to be out in December, 2010 and is being made for a reported 20 Million (US)
