Trek Movie has an update on Star Trek 3, the follow-up to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. This instalment will see former writer Roberto Orci (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) step into the director's chair. According to the site, the first draft of the script has been completed and pre-production has already begun with, "'pre-vis,' early effects tests, set and wardrobe design and even some casting discussions for new characters." It has yet to be given an official green light however. As for when the threequel will likely begin shooting, they add that it will start production in mid-February 2015 as Paramount Pictures are eyeing Summer 2016 (which also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the franchise) release dates with an announcement expected soon. As for those story details we promised you, they go on to add that it will be set "well into" the five year mission that Captain Kirk and his crew set out on at the conclusion of the previous film. Also, don't expect to see Earth in this one! Are you guys looking forward to Star Trek 3?

Into Darkness was a decent enough movie. The 2009 film was one of my favourite sci-fi movies ever.

This should be the end of Abrams Star Trek/Police Academy franchise. After this thing dies, hopefully Star Trek will return on TV and in the original continuity. It's past time for a series set decades after TNG.

Star Trek needs to be about progression but since Enterprise it's been about going backwards.

So... the "story details" are that it's well into the 5 year mission and takes place away from Earth. Slow news day.

Yes, let's trust Star Trek to the dude that looks like he eats his own shit. Good Job Paramount.

I enjoyed the first two very much, despite their glaring flaws. I'm definitely up for more.

Into Darkness was "good" it didn't blow me away like the first Star Trek film.

I'm worried for the third Star Trek film.

Imagine if 2015 has an economic collapse and all of these movies bomb spectacularly because no one has the disposable income for it. I'm not saying I want it to happen, but there are occasionally external factors that could make what seems like an awesome year now into the "Year the Blockbuster Died".

('08-'09 was actually a pretty good year for movies, so I think it would have to be something different or more severe.)

What made the previous Treks was the team chemistry, which I really think they need to improve upon for the Abrams's franchise.

@MexicanChinman
I would say I pity you. Given the fact that you watch Star Trek 2009, which was an indirect reboot of Police Academy, and actually think it's a good movie. But I don't. While I deserve a better Star Trek, you do not.

You actually deserve Abrams Star Trek. Just as you deserve Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Sin City 2.
