Star Trek: Captains of the Final Frontier Video Preview

Star Trek: Captains of the Final Frontier Video Preview

This Wednesday night the Bio Channel is airing a Star Trek special under the title Captains of the Final Frontier, which looks at the evolution of Kirk (both Shatner and Pine's), Picard, Sisko, Janeway and Archer.

Filled with interviews and clips, the two-hour documentary is extremely well done and absolutely worth checking out by Trek fans.

What's particularly interesting about the documentary is that it is not only a look at how the captains themselves changed over the course of their individual series (or film in the case of Pine), but how the Star Trek franchise itself has changed. Each captain personifies the franchise at the moment he took command, and the behind the scenes tidbits about the making of the shows are intriguing. Also a lot of fun are a series of stats (most encounters of the closest kind, first contacts, leading of landing parties, etc.). It's reassuring to know that Captain Kirk, despite having the smallest number of episodes, fares very well in these polls.

Below is a trailer for the documentary issued by the network.

i grew up with the original star wars trilogy, thats why i like it so much.

i the only star trek films i liked are star trek 2 wraith of khan, star trek first contact & star trek the reboot.

except story - show me one star trek film thats better than the empire strikes back.

charactors - boba fett,darth vader,chewbacca,yoda,han solo,luke skywalker & so on.

what's star trek got seven of nine, dax & the borg.

ideas - the actual size of the star wars universe is huge something star trek can't touch.

dialogue - some of the most quotable lines ever-no i am your father, these ain't the droids you are looking for & so on.

@ leee777

have you seen these wicked video's.

deadpool, I was speaking about things on a bit of a "deeper" level, not just the iconography:

Story - "Star Trek: The Original Series" had numerous terrific episodes written by the top sci-fi writers of the era, which were REAL, HARD sci-fi, with stimulating concepts and were heavily character driven; TNG and DS9 were pretty good, too.

Characters - The cast of TOS, TNG, and DS9 were ultimately much better developed and deeper then the paper-thin SW characters.

Ideas - The best of Star Trek is intelligent sci-fi; SW is a cartoon.

Dialogue - ST doesn't have anything as bad as 99% of the dialogue in the SW prequels.

Don't get me wrong, I love the original SW trilogy, too. Who doesn't?

But Trek is better. :P

Intruder, see above. :)

I love how Star Trek even though it is Science Fiction, it is scientifically more realistic than Star Wars. I like Star Wars too, but it is more fantasy and magic than science. I feel like it would be more probable to live in a universe where all Star Trek stuff is real, than Star Wars.

In Star Trek they always have scientific theories to back up whatever technology they have. In star wars, how can they travel to another galaxy in minutes using only light speed? Makes no sense.

But I like them both anyways!

P.S. If star wars would have had beautiful Deanna Troi, she would have read Palpatines intentions from the beginning, saving a lot of grief to everyone...

Of course this had to turn into a Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate. Personally, I love both universes and I hate seeing them compared to one another all the time. It's just like all those dumb DC character vs. Marvel Character debates that go on forever. If you ask me Star Trek and Star Wars are completely different from one another, other than the fact that they both start with the word "Star" and have lots of cool tech. Look, Star Trek is all about the science and tech which is why it is pretty much pure sci-fi. And while Star Wars does contain sci-fi in it, it really is about fantasy. The Federation is awesome and Jedi are awesome but they are very different and the series which they belong to tell two completely different stories. Apples to oranges I say! APPLES TO ORANGES!!!

"robotpo-Dude,Jabba The Hutt has better character depth and dialogue than the entire original Star Trek series.:P"

Clearly you've not seen the best of the original series, then...Watch "City on the Edge of Forever", "Balance of Terror", "Space Seed", "Amok Time"...most of Seasons 1 and 2, actually, then get back to me.

"Btw,Just give me 1 Sith Lord and he would be able to take out the entire crew of The SS Enterprise.Any version.lol"

Or they'd just beam him off the ship into space and watch him implode.

In the "Mirror, Mirror" episode of the original Star Trek it was established that the Kirk and Spock of that universe served The Empire.... does that mean those guys were part of the Star Wars universe? Hmmm......

Ed lol, must be a better Universe then! ; P

dp @ Cool vids m'man!

That is exactly why Star Wars is a million times better than Trek!

Can't wait for STAR WARS the live-action series and STAR TREK 2!

Intruder, fair enough, but I have to disagree about the depth of the characters.

Yes, SW, has more melodrama, but ST's characters are more fully developed, IMO. For example, look at the depth of Kirk's sacrifices in "City at the Edge of Forever", or his admission of wanting to be on a "cruise somewhere" in "Balance of Terror", or Spock's delight at seeing Kirk alive in "Amok Time", or how the characters gracefully aged into a family in the films.

By contrast:

Luke - Obnoxious farm boy who becomes an obnoxious Jedi Master. You can tell this because he speaks all of his dialogue in RotJ in a monotone.

Leia - Bitchy princess who becomes a somewhat less bitchy princess.

Han - Pirate with a heart of gold, who gives up being a pirate.

Chewie - A large dog-like thing.

3PO - A gay pain-in-the-ass robot.

R2 - A trusty, loyal vacuum cleaner with all sorts of attachments for getting out of any conceivable situation.

Jabba the Hutt - A frog meets the Godfather.

ETC and so on. SW'c characters just don't have much to them or change much as characters, they aren't really human, they're caricatures of humans. Just because their melodrama is BIGGER doesn't make it BETTER. At least, not for me it doesn't! :P :P

"Kirk-Obnoxious Starfleet captain with an overactive sex drive.

Spock-logical emotionless guy with pointy ears."

Well, that's how they started out, but they got better! :P

BTW, Most of my comments are tounge-in-cheek. I love the OT SW trilogy as I've said before...the prequels, now that's another matter. :P

Intruder, you forgot the following:

Scotty - alcoholic guy in charge of a nuclear reactor
McCoy - Grumpy old man with a big mouth
Piccard - Over-educated nerd
Geordi - Refer to Piccard's description

I like both universes, but it's still fun to laugh at both

The Dark Knight - Iron Man 2
Fox - Huntington Whiteley (well, maybe not this, LOL!)

I've been a Trek-fan for years but I will wait to watch this on the weekend when I'm not working (gotta be up for work at 3am LOL)

Anyway, Kirk vs. Picard- That is a tough one but i gotta go with Picard, Kirk is KING yeah...but sometimes too sex-driven to be taken seriously. I loved Picard he actually kicked more ass from what i could see and really focused on the job at hand even when cleavage was present, lol.

Archer actually grew on me a bit. He's the pioneer (newest one technically i know) but in the Trek universe he's the 1st and had to set the standard. Plus he really seemed the most simple and yet heroic.

Janeway...seemed to have more balls than all the other captains combined LMAO.

"make out with all their bitches"
"bang all the women"

LMFAO! That's Kirk for you.
Picard is THE best!
His voice alone would beat the crap out of Iron Man. You don't wanna see him lift his pinky.

I recently did a marathon of the entire run of Enterprise, and it's a FAR better series than I thought it was. Suffering from Voyager burn-out, I kind of stopped watching after a few episodes. Now I'm sorry I did. I also really love the season-long Xindi arc of season three (I know I'm in the minority there). I thought there were some powerful storylines and emotions there.
