Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is off to an ok start in China, but probably not the one Disney and Lucasfilm were hoping for. According to Variety, the movie opening with $9.7 million on Friday for a total of $10.4 million once Thursday night screenings are taken into account. However, something which may have hurt the movie is the fact that heavy smog is currently blanketing parts of China.
While these aren't bad numbers per se, they pale in comparison to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That made $27.8 million when it debuted on a Saturday last year and went on to make $53.2 million over the course of two days. Ultimately, the movie made $124 million there, a good chunk of its worldwide gross. Rogue One doesn't look set to make anywhere near as much, but we'll have to wait and see.
Whatever happens, the movie will still sail past the $1 billion mark worldwide, and it's not as if Rogue One is a flop! Stay tuned for additional updates on how much its made over the next few days.
