BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Tops IRON MAN 3 Worldwide

Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to rise up the charts after becoming only the fifth movie in history to gross more than $600 million in North America, and it's now beaten Iron Man 3 to become the ninth biggest movie of all-time. Hit the jump for details on that and more!

Iron Man 3 is no longer the ninth highest grossing movie of all-time after Star Wars: The Force Awakens has hit $1.23 billion to beat it to that spot yesterday. With it now only the fifth movie in history to earn $600 million in North America, the J.J. Abrams helmed release continues to exceed expectations, and joins an elite club which is made up of The Avengers ($623.4 million), Jurassic World ($652.3 million), Titanic ($658.7 million), and Avatar ($760.5 million). However, it will soon top them all by beating Avatar's record by the end of this weekend, and some analysts maintain that the movie will go on to earn as much as $1 billion domestically. We'll have a much better idea if Star Wars: The Force Awakens stands a chance of beating Avatar's worldwide haul of $2.7 billion when it reaches China next month, and things are certainly looking very good as of right now.

I've seen a few people who seem to think that the movie is starting to die down in terms of audience appeal, but I've gone twice in the past 2 days and let me tell you, the theaters are still selling out. I'm sure a huge part of that is the holiday season, but this movie has some serious staying power, and I wouldn't be surprised if this tops Avatar in the next few weeks, especially once it opens in China.

Disney and Lucasfilm achieved what they intended: a movie that could serve as a gateway for new fans, as well as a proper sequel for old fans.

What's funny about the comments on both sides is that they essentially read like this:

"The movie was awesome! They got the new trilogy off on the right foot by recapturing everything I loved about A NEW HOPE and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!"

"The movie sucked! They wasted a whole movie of this new trilogy by essentially remaking A NEW HOPE and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!"

I really hope it dethrones Avatar. Deserves it. After 3 times at the cinema, I must say that TFA is my most favorite movie this year.

" They wanted to do a retro movie. I don't like that. Every movie I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new."
