J.J. Abrams Comments On Benedict Cumberbatch STAR WARS Rumor

It's not a lengthy quote, but the director has commented on the persistent rumor that he'll re-team with his Star Trek Into Darkness villain for Star Wars Episode VII..and far from being a denial, he sounds pretty positive about it.

When the initial word of Benedict Cumberbatch's involvement in J.J Abrams' new Star Wars flick hit it was almost immediately dismissed as fan casting, before being denied by the actor's reps. But the rumor refused to go away, with the latest report from Latino review claiming that Cumberbtach is definitely, 100% in the movie (and the next two films in the new trilogy), no matter what he or anyone else involved may say to the contrary. Well now we have a quote on it from Abrams himself, who was quizzed about the rumor by LA Times reporter Yvonne Villarreal.

Hardly confirmation, but far from a dismissal at the same time. Of course Abrams' secrecy and fondness for deception also has to be taken into account, and he may just be keeping the rumor mill spinning. What do you guys think?

Hope he's a heroic character, not that I dislike him in a villain role but it would be nice to switch it up between Star Wars and Star Trek.

He's a great actor, I say give him a part. He need not play a villain, I think he'd be good as a Jedi too.

@JediP -- same here. He seems like a decent enough actor, but to me he looks strange. He's got an odd face. I don't see leading man or charisma, I see a guy who could be a good villain. But the weird obsession.. don't get it. Would someone explain please?

Keep the [frick]ing star trek actors out of the movie. Why is this so hard.

I'm a CumberBitch... Ya!
He's just incredible!

But don't want him Star Wars, he's already in Star Trek universe & he's famous already; bring talented Unkonwns, Star Wars doesn't need established actors!
If he's in then I have no choice but to love him in the role!

@JediP, I agree totally.

@NeoBaggins, I agree totally.

And saying that he loves the guy doesn't mean he will be in the movie. I'm sure he loves Chris Pine too, but that doesn't mean he'll be in it either. And Latino Review seriously needs to just shut up already. They sound kind of childish, "I'm right, don't listen to anyone but me."

He should play a Sith, a really mean Sith Darth Plageus
or an alien Sith like Darth Maul.

@NeoBaggins Maybe they can't refuse to deny good actors that fit the role just because they were in Star Trek.

Star Trek and Star Wars aren't the same thing.

Cumberbatch would be an asset to any franchise. He's a tremendous actor. Very versatile and as good at comedy as he is drama and action. That versatility could be tapped hugely during a 3 film franchise.

I;d like to see him start out the bad guy but actually turn to the good side through the 3 films.

I would prefer him to play Constantine in Justice League Dark and of course he'd make an amazing Riddler and Doctor Strange. You should try and see his Creature and Victor Frankensein performances in Danny Boyle's production of Frankenstein which was at the National Theatre and filmed for NTLive. Its been reissued again in the cinemas as it always sells out and is being used to help celebrate the National's 50th anniversary. It will be in selected cinemas in a number of countries during October/november. You'll then see what a great actor he is.

@OG, thanks! I'll have to check him out...

@BatmanHeisenberg, you're right. That voice will go down in history with the likes of Morgan Freeman, James Earl Jones, Patrick Stewart, Javier Bardem, Dennis Haybert, and, Kevin Conroy.

People who doubt his ability to carry a leading role need to watch Sherlock (it's on Netflix). I, too, used to be a skeptic. But when I saw that show, his performance was mind-melting. And of course he did a fantastic job in STID, where he kind of had his work cut out for him.

I think it would be awesome if he was in the new SW, whether he's a Jedi, a Sith, a bounty hunter, a smuggler, etc. I think he would be great.

Make him an alien so he won't look like the same person in Star Trek
