J.J. Abrams Reveals The CG Effect You Definitely Didn't Notice In STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a movie packed full of incredible practical and visual effects, but in a new excerpt from his director's commentary on the upcoming Blu-ray 3D release, the filmmaker reveals some CGI which was very cleverly hidden in plain sight. First though, he talks about how seeing an unfinished cut of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ultimately led to his decision to cast Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke (sadly, Abrams doesn't offer up any clues in regards to the villain's identity).
As for that special effect, the director reveals that Kylo Ren was actually going to be unmasked during this sequence. In fact, they shot it with Adam Driver not wearing the helmet, but when the decision was made to have him reveal his face a little later in the movie during Rey's interrogation, ILM saved the day by creating a flawless CGI mask which looks 100% real! They say that the best example of special effects is when you don't even know it's there, and that was definitely the case this time.
