New SOLO: A STAR WARS Concept Art Features Lando Calrissian And Some Wacky Alternate Designs For L3-37

Solo: A Star Wars Story may have bombed at the box office but fans agree that Lando Calrissian and L3-37 were the spinoff's breakout characters and now some new concept art features some alternate designs.

As of right now, it appears as if Solo: A Star Wars Story will be Lucasfilm's first real flop and that's bound to have an impact on how Disney goes about greenlighting spinoffs like this moving forward. Whether moviegoers just weren't interested in a Han Solo origin story or a combination of behind the scenes issues and a bad marketing campaign were to blame, though, is something we may never know.

In the meantime, at least we can enjoy some awesome new concept art from Solo! This latest batch puts the focus on Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian and his faithful droid/lover (yes, lover) L3-37.

While it's clear that Lucasfilm always had a very specific idea in mind for how the former should look, the studio's talented team of concept artists clearly took their time deciding on a look for the droid and she went through an awful lot of iterations before a final look was decided on. Anyway, you can check those out and more by clicking on the "View List" button below to see this awesome new artwork.

@santoanderson - He was rumored at one point but I believe he couldn't do it after he accepted the role of Killmonger.

This was the first droid i actually found a bit annoying, tho i really enjoyed her scene liberating the other droids who ran the mine main control center, and then afterwards i was surprised she was killed so fast ike we barely just got introduced to her and then BANG she gone lol. Oh well, hope we get some concept art from Chewie on the way he was the only character i truly loved in the movie, and he looked great with his googles 'n shit.

So we’re in agreement that the L3/Qi’Ra Scene in the Falcon Cockpit about Lando and Love was straight up Improve scene from L&M original filming?

Now that Lando's the freakiest of space horn dogs, exactly was L3-37's "private spot." Any concepts?

Keep on designing brand new droids for every movie. It’s not like protocol droids survived from the prequel era to the new movies. Same design. Yes, keep making brand new designs so it starts to resemble a brand new franchise, instead of Star Wars. 10 years, and they will have light guns, shootings out light saber-like blasts.

Wait... His lover? Where did I miss that in the movie? Was it just some small reference or did they flat out say it? I don't remember that at all
BuckyCap

@BigDriggs - It was pretty heavily implied throughout the movie...

There are two specific scenes that come to mind. One where L3 is complaining about about one of her "ass" (maybe she isn't - the dialogue is pretty muddled) and tells Lando "You're going to need to do that thing again." Lando just kind of looks down and nods.

The second scene is where L3 is telling Qi-Ra that Lando is in love with her. Qi-Ra asks, "How does that even work?" and L3 looks at her and says, "It works."

Then there is the big emotional display Lando made when L3 is shot, which is less explicit, but makes more sense in the context of them being lovers since Lando generally doesn't give a shit about other robots and treats them like things.

@BuckyCap - hmm I guess I could see how those examples could be interpreted in that way. I guess I just never really thought anything of it when I was watching the movie.

The L3 CGI was very very impressive. She looked completely real the whole time.
