The Walt Disney Company's Lucasfilm Ltd. and Marvel Entertainment are joining forces to bring new Star Wars adventures to readers across the galaxy, with Marvel granted exclusive rights to create and publish Star Wars comics and graphic novels beginning in 2015.

The agreement marks a homecoming for the Star Wars comic books. Marvel Comics published the first Star Wars comic book, STAR WARS #1, in March 1977, which went on to sell more than 1 million copies. Marvel Comics published its STAR WARS series for nine years. In 1991, Dark Horse Comics took over the license, publishing fan-favorite titles like Dark Empire and Star Wars: Legacy. Last year, Dark Horse released The Star Wars #1, an adaptation of George Lucas' original rough-draft screenplay for the film, garnering rave reviews and national media attention and ranking among the top-selling Star Wars comics of all time.

"Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had," said Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing, Disney Publishing Worldwide. "In 2015, the cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia and Chewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within the Star Wars universe.

"We here at Marvel could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels," said Marvel Worldwide Publisher and President, Dan Buckley. "The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away."

"We're incredibly excited by this next chapter in the Star Wars saga," said Andrew B. Sugerman, executive vice president of Disney Publishing Worldwide. "Bringing together the iconic Lucasfilm and Marvel brands to tell new stories will allow us to continue to thrill lovers of the original Star Wars comic books and entertain generations to come."

There was no way this wasn't going to happen. I loved what Dark Horse did with Star Wars and I am grateful to have collected the a few of the Star Wars comic books/graphic novels that they made.

But I am eager to see what Marvel does with this. I hope they can get Weisman to pen a couple stories for them.

WOOOOOOOWWWWW Marvel struck it gold. Man that is a huge thing to make. Star wars comics have to be in the top 10 most known, so Marvel just takes another step forward here.

@B&y I have no problem with Disney putting Star Wars in their kid shows, as long as they don't put their kid shows in Star Wars.

This is seriously awful news even if it was just a matter of time. Dark Horse has done great Star Wars comics and showed the entire history of the universe so this will basically be a reboot. I for one am not interested in more comics about the Big Three since there's 20 years of books about their adventures after Return of the Jedi and I've read most of them. They're pointless to re-do again except for more money. I heard Brian Woods's Star Wars comic good even though I chose not to read it and I'm guessing they'll stay since he writes for Marvel too. I'll miss Legacy and Dawn of the Jedi since they're great. Those are much more interesting stories to me than more stories about Luke, Han, and Leia who are in their 60s at this point and should retire and let the next generation take over. It's disappointing.

Yeah Im done with SW comics. We didn't need a new SW film series every year after 2015, and we certainly don't need [frick]ing Star Wars in 616. Oh and Marvel will do this, there are a few things Marvel will always do no matter what.

1) They will either do [frick] all with this like the Disney comics they got from Boom studios.

2) They will integrate this into 616 in the most retarded way humanly imaginable.

3) Its going to get popular, thus Marvel will milk it out until no one wants to see anymore SW comics from them in the next 50 years.

And if by some miracle these comics are any good, then Marvel will [frick] it up again. They [frick]ed up JMS Spider-Man and Thor, they [frick]ed Spectacular Spider-Man and Avengers EMH and if these comics are any good the WILL [frick] them up some how.
