ROGUE ONE Co-Writer Says Future STAR WARS Films Won't Be Based On Legacy Characters Or Stories

The galaxy is a big place, but the stories of Star Wars thus far have made it seem rather small. According to Rogue One co-writer Gary Whitta, however, that's all set to change in future films...

The Star Wars film saga has whisked audiences to a galaxy far, far away for 40 years, introducing us to different planets, alien species, and plenty of exciting stories. However, for the most part, these stories have revolved around the Skywalker family legacy, and the events that spiral out from it. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first film to put the spotlight elsewhere, though there was still a heavy shadow from the original film's legacy through the inclusion of Darth Vader, Tarkin, Princess Leia, and the Death Star.

With the next spin-off film set to focus on a young Han Solo, followed by the (still unconfirmed) Boba Fett film, fans have wondered if the creative team at Lucasfilm ever plans to expand their reach beyond the familiar and delve into new stories and characters unrelated to the main saga. According to Rogue One co-writer Gary Whitta, that's exactly what Lucasfilm is aiming to do.

"The next spin-off is Han Solo, that’s another familiar character, but I think increasingly you’re going to see…One of the thing things we really want to do at Lucasfilm is create a universe and not keep relying on old legacy characters," Whitta told Coming Soon. "We’ve got Rey and Finn and Kylo Ren, they’ve already introduced a new generation of characters. Whatever kind of Star Wars films they’re making 10 or 20 years from now, I don’t think they’re going to be relying on the same legacy story elements as we have in the past."

This will probably come as welcome news to many, especially given the wealth of material in the Star Wars Universe, canon or not. Is there anything you want to see that hasn't been done before? Let us know in the comments!

Worst Star Wars movie ever made

In case you guys forgot how much I dislike rogue one xD

The prequels at least had a little 'try' in them, and actually attempted to expand their universe with their bland characters.

I hope so. The possibility of damaging the characters is huge.

I fear for the Han Solo film already.

For now the legacy elements was the only good one, the three useless of Ep 7 are the worst thing that happen in the Star Wars franchise, Jar Jar was a masterpiece compared to them.
