Despite the fact that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has received extremely positive reviews from critics, fans of the franchise don't seem convinced and that appears to have been reflected in the user score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the CinemaScore tells a very different story as the movie was given an "A" by moviegoers and the ComScore is extremely positive with an overall score of 5 stars and 89%.
As a result, it appears as if something fishy may be going on platforms where fans are able to share scores without having seen the movie and as many times as they please (hence why The Last Jedi has 5 on Metacritics, 7.9/10 on IMDb, and 56% on Rotten Tomatoes). Non-Disney sources tell Deadline that this is "trolling" and that there are even Facebook pages creating bots to actually rig these numbers.
Simply put, what matters to Disney are the far more accurate and reliable CinemaScore and ComScore; the box office results also boost the studio's confidence in what Rian Johnson has delivered and while there are undoubtedly plenty of people who didn't like the movie, those user-submitted scores should be taken with a pinch of salt and most definitely won't lead to Johnson losing that planned trilogy!
"Rian Johnson, the cast, and the Lucasfilm team have delivered an experience that is totally Star Wars yet at the same time fresh, unexpected and new," says Disney president of theatrical distribution Dave Hollis. "That makes this a Star Wars film like audiences have never seen – it’s got people talking, puzzling over its mysteries, and it’s a lot to take in, and we see that as all positive, that should help set the film up for great word-of-mouth and repeat viewing as we enter the lucrative holiday period."
