Spider-Man Director Jon Watts To Helm Star Wars: Episode X As New Trilogy Continues The Skywalker Saga

Spider-Man: No Way Home helmer Jon Watts is set to direct the first movie in a new Star Wars trilogy, which will reportedly be Episode X of the Skywalker Saga, with Rey returning.

The Mandalorian and Grogu wasn't the box office hit Disney and Lucasfilm expected. Now, all eyes will be on next summer's Star Wars: Starfighter to see if Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling can dispel the notion that Star Wars is a streaming property.

Starfighter will also be the final Star Wars project developed by former Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. Dave Filoni has since been appointed the studio's co-President, and no doubt has a vastly different vision for this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) has confirmed that Spider-Man franchise director Jon Watts has been tapped to helm the first instalment of Star Wars Rebels and X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg's new trilogy. Knight Edge Media was the first to reveal Watts' involvement with Episode X.

The trade has also learned that this movie will be Episode X of the Skywalker Saga, and not a completely unrelated trilogy. At exactly what point in the timeline it's set isn't clear, but it's said that Rey "would appear in some capacity in the new trilogy."

The decision to end The Rise of Skywalker with the reveal that Rey had named herself "Rey Skywalker" didn't land well, so it will be interesting to see whether we somehow meet any new members of the original Skywalker bloodline. It makes sense for Rey's story to continue here, especially since her solo outing, first announced in 2023, has yet to materialise after burning through multiple writers.

Will Episode X become a reality on Filoni's watch? "Sources say the project is still in development and has not yet been greenlit by parent company Disney," the report notes, "although it seems to be project the furthest along the development track after Starfighter."

Watts is no stranger to Star Wars. He developed and directed episodes of Disney+'s Skeleton Crew, which holds a 92% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The filmmaker also has blockbuster experience, having helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home for Marvel Studios.

Promoting Skeleton Crew, Watts said, "I mean, I love 'Star Wars.' I’d love to do anything in the 'Star Wars' universe, and I think we set it up in a way where the story can continue in a lot of interesting ways."

Kinberg's track record isn't quite as good. He wrote the Oscar-nominated Ridley Scott film The Martian, but is also responsible for duds like X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four, and Dark Phoenix.

Stay tuned for updates on Star Wars Episode X as we have them.

This is a very risky move on his part, as everyone who got involved with this franchise since Disney took over, both behind and in front of the camera, have taken a major hit to their careers and reputations.

@TheJok3r - You're not wrong, but I'm hopeful since Filoni is now in charge. Even Mando and Grogu wasn't bad. My only issue (if you could even call it that) was that it just felt like episodes from the show (which makes sense), rather than something that demanded to be seen in cinemas. But it was entertaining.

If they have a good idea, and let directors do their jobs, they may be able to turn the current perception oof Star Wars around.

Skeleton Crew was really good. There was no way they were not going to do Episode X- there was too much money in that branding.

With Maul show bringing in Darth Talon, and Filoni now head of Lucasfilm, I’m guessing he will be taking inspiration from George Lucas’ original pitch.

@MrDandy - As long as it's not Lucas' idea to have the whole thing be about gotdam midichlorians. Yeah, that's not what I want to see.

@MrDandy - Without going to look it up, name two characters from Skeleton Crew

That show was just kind of ~there~

As for his Spider Man trilogy? If Brand New Day has shown us anything, it’s that those movies would’ve been major earners regardless as to who was behind the camera.

But I digress…Watts is just about the safest director choice Disney could’ve gotten. He’s a studio soldier, will do what he’s told, keep things on budget, deliver the film on time, AND he’ll do it all without any major problems.

The far bigger issue is the guy who’s writing this thing……..

@MrDandy - I don't think an episode X was ever part of Lucas' plans. Filoni wants to honor Lucas he should softboot the franchise by remaking the final trilogy his way.
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 9/27/2026, 5:42 PM
@ObserverIO - well, technically, at one point in the late 70s Lucas had a plan for 12 chapters before scaling it back. Still, obviously what Disney has done to his Star Wars is kind of like violence by rehashing his ideas in the sequels so there’s that too lol
whoknows
whoknows - 9/27/2026, 9:06 PM
@BiffDitko - nah I’d rather that pitch than the same old same old. Trying to retread the past has gotten Disney no where. At least George’s idea for the trilogy pushes the universe to places it hasn’t been and even if someone don’t want an explanation for how the force works and the greater forces as at play in the galaxy. Let’s see the whills, quantum realm shit, I’m all for it as long the story is compelling and meaningful. Not much else outside of filoni’s clone wars, rebels and some stuff from ahsoka has actually pushed the worldbuilding forward into unexpected places. Andor exception and exceptionally well done. Still had a refreshing take on the Star Wars mythos, though it didn’t add anything new it gave an amazing telling of the build up of a rebellion and the angst amongst the common folk in the galaxy. But I want explore the mythos, I don’t care if it peels back some of the magic, I’m here for what the creator wanted, and see what roots were beneath the soil of the forest he created.

SkyWalker Saga? They all dead now. Rey doesn't count. Lol.

I'd be happy to see them explore those force sensitive kids though from Episode 8.

If I have to watch move skywalker stuff, i'd just tune into Ashoka.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 9/27/2026, 11:15 AM
@UnderBelly - that would be a good starting point focusing on those kids instead of making Stars Wars all about the Skywalkers (and you’re correct Rey is not a Skywalker at all)
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 9/27/2026, 11:23 AM
@Arthorious - I liked what Rian was going for with steering away from them and looking at the wider galaxy! I just don't like the fact he killed over half the rebellion in that silly chase and had Luke sacrifice himself from a million miles a way. The force projection idea was cool, but the execution could have been better.

mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 9/27/2026, 4:29 PM
@UnderBelly - Yeah its so cringe and forced. For [frick] sakes they should just create a new saga and start it from episode 1 again. When I see the word Skywalker, all it means is that Palpetine is going to return again. How many times is Disney going to keep using Palpetine or the empire who are already dead?

Carrie Fisher is dead, Mark Hamil has retired the role, and Daisy Ridley is a palpetine but posing with Skywalker's name.

What are they going to do? Randomly insert that Kylo Ren and Rey have a child that is part skywalker, palpetine, and solo? Thats just dumb.

No way this is actually Episode X. Doubt they would that let come out on a random sunday without any big announcement.

Also, I'm really on a "I'll believe it when I see it" basis with Star Wars now? This is the umpteenth director working now on a Star Wars movie, and we haven't seen much yet.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/27/2026, 11:16 AM
@bkmeijer1 - it was scooped first and then all the trades started to confirm yet so I think it being 10 is legit but we’ll see.

I do agree with you though , I’ll wait and see if this happens or not.

bkmeijer1 - 9/27/2026, 12:11 PM
@TheVisionary25 - true that. Still, was it ever confirmed Kinberg was working on the threequel trilogy? Thought it was just a seperate thing.

Also, wouldn't mind it if the Rey movie and The Hunt for Ben Solo are folded into it.

Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 9/27/2026, 11:16 AM
How can you have a continuation of the Skywalker saga when every single Skywalker is DEAD? Disney made sure to wipe out their entire bloodline, leaving only Rey who claims to be a "Skywalker", but is related in no way and is actually a descendant of Palpatine, the most evil man in the galaxy. 😝
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 9/27/2026, 11:32 AM
@Feralwookiee - Exactly. They murdered the franchise with the last trilogy. It should have focused on the kids and grandkids of Luke, Mara Jade, Han, and Leia and had a new evil threat face the New Republic. Instead, they gave us awful characters, killed off (the Legendary films) past, made Han a deadbeat dad who lost all character growth, destroyed Luke and made them all complete failures who accomplished nothing in the original trilogy. A redo using George’s original sequel treatment would be the only chance of salvaging this and that’s not gonna happen.

@Feralwookiee - well, I’m sure Anakin Skywalker’s force ghost will make an appearance, as this is part of the Skywalker Saga. Then they could also tie Rey’s parents, one a Palpatine, the other a Skywalker, which would make her a true Skywalker and the reason she has such a strong use of the Force within her. Maybe Shmi had a hidden brother or sister, just as Luke and Leia were. Her offspring created Rey’s mother.

This is the perfect way to get some closure in the sequel era and the in-between era. Everyone gets a better send off. Maybe fix the mistakes of the sequels and other in-betweenels. Redeem characters and stories and if successful. Have a massive time jump with Grogu running the Jedi.

@Mrnorth1921 - IDK about.you, but I got super pissed about people hating on the way Luke was in "TLJ" what? The guy who was taught how to use The Firce by two recluse hermits became a recluse hermit himself???? No!!!
Lol
Luke became like his teachers, BUT at the end he actually exceeded what they ever did.
I have no issues with the way Luke was handled in "The Last Jedi" he turned out like his teachers.
So this new trilogy COULD correct those "mistakes" they could set up Rey and Grogu as "The New School" of Jedi where Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Luke were the "Old School".
There is a TON here to work with and I'm pretty excited they got Watts to helm it.
Mrnorth1921

Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 9/27/2026, 11:36 AM
@BiffDitko - I want that. and I love what they did with Luke. It make sense to his character. And if we want to make an argument why he didn’t change his way from the old Jedi, it’s because he didn’t know what happened. He assumed it was all palaptine’s fault and I doubt Yoda or obi wan believe that the Jedi were to blame for all that transpired.

@BiffDitko - how about Grogu vs Rey?
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 9/27/2026, 6:51 PM
@bkmeijer1 - No, no, no.
She should be looking for him, expecting some wise, aged Jedi.
Instead she gets basically a teenager, cause he'd be around 100something. Powerful, but undisciplined. So maybe SHE teaches him some stuff, he teaches her some stuff, they then decide to bring about a whole new type of Jedi. One not really tied down to the "old ways".
Idk...something along those lines.
The great thing about Grogu as a character is his age. We Know Yoda lived to be 900 YEARS at least, as of "The Mandalorian & Grogu" he's like what? 51? 52?
So aging him up to even 150 means he's still going to be "immature" not really honed like Yoda, just raw power. Like I said they could both learn something from one another.
I actually hope "Starfighter" at least alludes to Rey or Grogu.
The Jedi aren't going anywhere, they just need a refresh.
That's what I'm hoping for.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 9/28/2026, 1:56 AM
@BiffDitko - that's probably more interesting beyond the bit I propose.

Also, who else should be in this new Jedi Order? I elect Cal Kestis, Gungi and Karr Nuq Sin. Also, make Finn the Grandmaster.
