SPOILER: Is This Why 'Luke' Is In Exile In STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS?

We know Luke (Mark Hamill) has been out of the picture for some time leading up to the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but what drove him into (seemingly) self-imposed exile? Well, it might have something to do with how the Jedi are now perceived in the galaxy...

Because Luke has been absent from pretty much all Star Wars: The Force Awakens promotion so far, fans have begun to let their imaginations run riot with some pretty wild speculations - but the theory that the son of Skywalker will now be a villain may not be too far from the mark... from a certain point of view.

According to EW, the First Order Stormtroopers are recruited as children, and fed a bunch of propaganda about the war that raged between the Empire and the Rebellion - but of course the Imperial Forces are portrayed as the good guys in those stories. Apparently having been raised as a Stormtrooper, Finn has been taught that Luke Skywalker was "a villain who destroyed the benevolent Empire."

It seems not only have the Jedi passed into legend, but the general perception around the galaxy could well be that they weren't a terribly nice bunch. Taking that into account, wouldn't it make sense that Luke would want to take himself out of the picture?

Just a theory, but all will be revealed in just over a month when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18.
