SPOILERS: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Director Says The Truth About Rey's Parents Is Actually "Still Open"

Star Wars: The Last Jedi definitely seemed to put the mystery surrounding Rey's parentage to bed for good, but director Rian Johnson now suggests that there could be more to the story. Take a look...

In one of the most divisive moments of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren reveals the truth about Rey's parents: they were drunks who sold her off, and are now laying dead in a pauper's grave somewhere.

Not exactly what fans were hoping to hear, but it did finally give us a definitive answer after all of the theories and speculation... or did it?

Rian Johnson has previously stated that, as far as he's concerned, Kylo was not lying (Rey did seem to know the truth herself, after all) - but that doesn't mean that Episode IX won't take things in another direction. Here's what the director had to say on the matter during an interview with The Huffington Post:

"Anything’s still open, and I’m not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it. With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given. But for me, dramatically, that’s why that reveal at that moment made sense."

What do you guys thunk? Were you satisfied with the reveal, or would you like to see the mystery reopened in Episode IX? Sound off below.

So now they're backtracking due to fan reaction.

@Antithesis - Putting aside back tracking (which I agree is highly possible), I never believed her parents reveal simply because the only account of her parentage is from Kylo.

He clearly wants her on his side when he "reveals her parents" and clearly isn't above manipulation to get it. By saying she has no family, he can make her feel he is the only one in the galaxy she has a bond with.

@StormXmen123 - I get where your coming from, but it's still lazy and stupid. Mysteries need resolution. Not bullshit.

@Antithesis - Mysteries don’t need resolutions especially in Star Wars.

Luke I’m your father.. the end! Never got explained in the original trilogy!

We must not forget that these are episodes that fit in a saga. Answer can be resolved or giving in the next episode that will conclude the story!

Nonetheless we are left waiting for two years for answers!

@baszs - "luke I'm your father"... is not a mystery It's a statement.

@Antithesis - Not due to fan reaction. Due to the fact that Disney made a poor decision and let each director tell their own story (which is why Rian basically dropped every intriguing plot thread J.J set up), which is about the worst thing you can do when trying to tell a coherent story. Each director has competing visions and now J.J has the difficult task of continuing his original story without contradicting what Rian did.

@Antithesis - nope

The mirror reveals Rey’s parents. What does she see when she looks in the mirror?

Nobody.

She has no parents because she was immaculately conceived (similar to Anakin).

The drunks that sold her may have been people that found her and used her, but mark my words: She is immaculately conceived - its the best explanation for her moment with the mirror.

@Antithesis - “Darth Vader betrayed and murdered your father” - also a statement that was later revealed to be untrue..or at least mysteriously true

@Lucasberg - it wasn't a mystery, it we a lie.

@Lucasberg - You're jumping to conclusions to say she was immaculately conceived. But, even so, she would have a mother, right? Technically, what she saw in the mirror was many of herself, not merely no one..

@Antithesis - @Lucasberg - Making Vader Luke's father was not the original story. There was no guarantee of a sequel in 1977. I read something once about scrapped ideas for the 2nd film that Lucas had, and Empire was almost completely different. The father and sister reveals were made up as they went along.

The changes between TFA and TLJ are really no different than the original trilogy course corrections. I never bought that what Kylo said was anything more than trying to get Rey on his team. Rian may have meant it to be true, but the Episode 9 director was going to have the final say, just like it took the confirmation from Yoda in ROTJ to put the Vader issue to rest. I guess now we will get to see what JJ originally intended.

@ImmovableForce - or maybe she has no father or mother.

She saw and endless string of her selves until she asked the question, “show me my parents”

Then she sees, two shadowy figures (light and darkside?) merge into one Figure - herself.

No parents and conceived by the force
