Some problems here.

1) The copyright situation on all that wonderful SW stuff written after the first trilogy make it untouchable. Come on guys that's film school 101.

2) Feige is unique in the Industry up to this point. As I read it what he did was a lot more like Stan Lee with comics than the normal movie approach which is what Kathleen Kennedy and every other film exec who is not also the content creator* has done up till now.

*i.e. Lucas

That sort of approach from a film executive did not exist before he took the reins on Aug 31, 2009 which was after IM 1, TIH and most of IM 2 (it was in post at that time).

3) Something you left out was the legacy character problem; they HAD to have the three living principals participate and there were problems.
a) Harrison insisted on Han dying.
b) Carrie actually did die halfway thru her principal arc.
c) Mark failed to realise that one of the chief goals was to get rid of the legacy roles and set up new ones. Sadly they did a better job of the former than the latter.

None of the above helped.
