STAR WARS: Casting News For Daisy Ridley's Upcoming REY Movie Is Expected To Drop Imminently

We have an exciting update regarding the upcoming Star Wars movie revolving around Daisy Ridley's Rey Skywalker movie, including the fact casting news could be revealed any day now. Read on for details...

Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron was once scheduled to  be released in theaters this month, but like many Star Wars movies overseen by Kathleen Kennedy, it's a project that's somehow fallen by the wayside at Lucasfilm.

The next Star Wars movie is currently dated for May 2026 and is likely to be the one revolving around Daisy Ridley's returning Rey Skywalker. While Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) penned an early version of the screenplay, Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) has since been enlisted to write a new draft for filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, the story will revolve around the sequel trilogy hero rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down.

It's previously been reported that the untitled movie will feature two Black leads, one male and one female, as the students Rey is teaching to carry forward the ways of the Jedi. Now, we have an update from Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic podcast (via SFFGazette.com) and it sounds like news is imminent.

"I wouldn’t be surprised if we got Star Wars news this month. Star Wars has always been a franchises that has like...things don’t always get announced. I remember years ago that this was uproar that Star Wars hadn’t hired a writer of colour, but I came out, after people told me privately, and said that they have writers of colour, but that they don’t want to respond to all the nonsense essentially."

"I do think that there are things lying in wait. Possibly casting news that are already done. I think that the Daisy Ridley movie has its leads already and it is just a matter of a reporter finding out."

We won't get too excited just yet but this seems to suggest at least some cast members will be revealed before the holidays. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have caused significant delays but Disney is keen to get Star Wars back in theaters where it belongs. We're also hearing the plan is still for shooting to commence in London next April.

In other news, a press release sent out by Disney+ previewing the streamer's slate appears to confirm the release of only Star Wars TV shows in 2024. Andor was previously confirmed for an August 2023 premiere, but shooting was disrupted over the summer and it looks like it's now heading our way in 2025.

Here's what Disney+ has confirmed is on the way:

'Star Wars: The Acolyte'' will premiere on Disney+ in 2024. The series is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.

'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew' tells the story of four kids who find themselves lost in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home. This series will arrive on the platform in 2024.

Stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for all the latest Star Wars updates as we have them.

@Thing94 - of course that won't happen.

It's got rey in it, it has 2 black leads, and one of them is a woman.

This film will be protected like gollum protecting the one ring.

And since it's disney, it's the gollum from the most recent game 🤣

@Thing94 - That could be a new saying.... This movie has been Batgirled.

they make a horrible sh!tty Star Wars trilogy abomination.

Let's make it worse! Of course a sequel.

@DocSpock - They should have either jumped enough time in the future so that all these sequel characters can be ignored or use the World Between Worlds stuff they introduced in Rebels and retcon the shit out of it. But of course not... why give people what they want when they can lose money instead.

This movie will flop harder than The Marvel's

Urubrodi - 12/5/2023, 7:16 AM
@WaffeX - It won't make as much money as a Star Wars movie should but it won't do that bad. For all its problems Rise of Skywaler still made more than a billion. Plus, it's been a while since the last Star Wars movie so that can help them.

@Urubrodi - "For all its problems Rise of Skywaler still made more than a billion."

That was pre-pandemic, and, more importantly, pre-Disney Plus. They really need to extend that window of exclusivity back out to 3-6 months if they want people to pay money to see it in cinemas.

Did we just get a news article about news possibly dropping soon?.

Anyway , I’m likely in the minority on here but I’m interested in this…

Granted I am biased since it’s the first SW film being directed by a Pakistani but i enjoyed Ms Obaid-Chinoy’s work on Ms Marvel and am also interested to see how she brings her mainly documentary or non fiction background to a film like this aswell if at all.

Also , I also liked Daisy Ridley in the sequel trilogy and thought Rey was the best out of the heroic trio in those films so i want to see the next step of her story aswell.

@TheVisionary25 - All of this. I'm ready for more Star Wars on the big screen, and after taking a 5 year break after Rise of Skywalker, I'm hoping they can knock it out of the park.

Tbh with the way things are rn, I don’t think Iger would’ve even let this be greenlit without there being a pretty great idea behind it. You lot just can’t get behind it because it’s Rey, but you all hated Anakin for years until a couple weeks ago too, so…
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 12/5/2023, 7:23 AM
@FireandBlood - Anakin and the prequels were hated for nearly a decade. Only thing people enjoyed about those movies were the fights and darth maul. And it wouldn’t be until after clone wars, basically 200+ hrs of new content, did people love the prequels.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/5/2023, 7:24 AM
@Mrnorth1921 - Exactly! There’s just a lot of revisionist history going on lately when it comes to the prequels, but I ‘member.
Blergh
Blergh - 12/5/2023, 7:28 AM
@FireandBlood - To be fair there could be a fair share of bts politics behind it but I agree, Iger has final say and he's turned incredibly protective over Disney IPs.
However the Rey movie could be a holdover from Chapek.

As for the prequels, I was a kid when they came out so I'll forever have a massive bias for them. I love the political stories pulled from real-life, enjoyed most of Ep1/3 and can tolerate Ep2. I even like Jar Jar.

It's just a matter of time until fans that were kids when the sequels came out will get a voice in the internet discussion as well.
I may have hated most of the sequels (mostly Ep8) but I'm aware that many people loved them as well.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/5/2023, 7:36 AM
@Blergh - It’s not fair enough into production for Iger to let it carry over if it’s too much of a risk. Star Wars can’t afford nothing but a win in the movie department now, that’s why they’ve been so hesitant.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 12/5/2023, 7:40 AM
@FireandBlood - And if this movie is good. I heard the guy who is doing Deadpool 3 wants to do a Ben solo movie. Which can redeem arguably the best character of the sequels. And both of these movies can up the feats and allow for better fight choreography, so fans can be quiet about the fights.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 12/5/2023, 7:49 AM
@FireandBlood - most hated anakin is eps 1 and 2 and liked him in 3. Its always been that way
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 12/5/2023, 7:54 AM
@FireandBlood - ep 3 was always pretty well received, dont make shit up
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/5/2023, 7:55 AM
@Ryguy88 - No it hasn’t 😂 Anakin was hated in all 3 of those movies for years, and there’s critic reviews, decades worth of fan forums, and YouTube channels built on the back of that hatred to back that up. It’s only recently fans have started to openly like those movies and show Hayden Christensen some appreciation.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 12/5/2023, 7:59 AM
@Ryguy88 - it got a 70% on rotten tomatoes. And it was liked. Had the best rating of the prequels. However people appreciate it more, because the Clone Wars. But in the past, no one really cared for it. They complied that Anakin was wooden, the fights were over the top, the dialogue was terrible. There is a reason why Lucas didn’t want to make another Star Wars movie after these ones.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/5/2023, 8:00 AM
@Ryguy88 - It was, but Hayden’s performance was the one thing about that movie that consistently wasn’t, so stop trying to revise history. Hayden’s performance as Anakin wasn’t well received, and it’s borderline delusional let alone outright dishonest to suggest otherwise, especially when all the reviews are still there that prove otherwise.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 12/5/2023, 8:09 AM
@FireandBlood - your splitting hairs here on a very specific part of a movie that we both agree was generally liked. Pretty hard to prove your argument outside of it just being your opinion
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/5/2023, 8:10 AM
@Ryguy88 - I’m not, because I was talking about Anakin, not the movie. And Anakin wasn’t well received, and received a lot worse than Rey ever was. You’re choosing to ignore that because, well… I don’t even know, because you’re not even making a point. Just typing shit for the sake of it atp 😂

@marvel72 - the guy has no argument so he has to fall back on buzz words as per usual.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 12/5/2023, 7:21 AM
I think this movie is a good thing. We’re moving past the sequels into new territory. Allowing new stories to flourish. And these movies could give more development and struggles to her character. I mean the prequels were hated for years. Then clone wars came around and after 200+ hrs of new content made the prequel movies likable. This could be good or could be meh.
