STAR WARS Fan Art Gives John Boyega's Finn The Jedi Transformation The Sequel Trilogy Failed To Deliver

The hope had been that ex-Stormtrooper Finn might become a Jedi in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but it never happened. Now, though, some new fan art imagines what that could look like in a future movie.

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we were introduced to Finn, a Stormtrooper who abandoned his post to ultimately fight back against the First Order. Marketing materials for the movie suggested he might be a Jedi in the making, but The Last Jedi moved on from that idea, instead establishing the character as a serial deserter who eventually decided to become a hero (again).

J.J. Abrams, looking to undo most of what Rian Johnson did in his movie, spent a good chunk of The Rise of Skywalker teasing a big reveal about Finn that never came. However, we'd later learn he had started showing signs of being a Force-user, though it was too little too late by that point.

John Boyega has expressed disappointment and frustration with how Finn's story arc was handled, and unless we get a follow-up to the sequel trilogy, we probably won't ever see him become a Jedi.

Thankfully, a new piece of fan art (via SFFGazette.com) reveals what that could have looked like. This is an idea with realm potential, but not even original Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow intended to have Finn use the Force. Instead, he was going to be a Resistance hero, fighting the good fight on Coruscant in an epic final battle that would have finally brought an end to the First Order.

Love them or hate them, the Star Wars sequels were a mess. We could talk forever about what might have been, but at last amazing artwork like this gives us a visual representation of that. If we do see Finn again, fingers crossed he's wielding a lightsaber alongside Rey, but we won't get our hopes up.
