STAR WARS: Mark Hamill Says Concerned Studio Execs Wanted Chewie To Wear Lederhosen

Legendary Star Wars actor Mark Hamill has taken to Twitter to share a funny story from the early days of shooting A New Hope about studio execs suggesting that a pants-less Chewbacca wear lederhosen...

Chewbacca is one of the most iconic and enduring characters in the history of the galaxy far, far away, but Han Solo's loyal friend and co-pilot may have left a slightly different legacy behind if studio execs had their way back when the first Star Wars movie was filming in 1977.

Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, The Dark Knight Rises) shared some early Ralph McQuarrie concept art for the beloved wookiee on Twitter, and Mark Hamill responded with a very funny anecdote.

According to the legendary Luke Skywalker actor, some 20th Century Fox became concerned when they realized that Chewie wouldn't be wearing any pants (despite the fact that he was covered in thick fur), and suggested fitting the character will a pair of lederhosen.

We're torn between feeling eternally grateful that George Lucas didn't listen, and wishing at least one photo of Chewbacca wearing knee-length leather shots and braces existed.

I’ve always wondered how Chewy could understand Han Solo’s “English” but couldn’t speak it.

@WruceBayne - it's actually not unreasonable to assume he can understand galactic basic but can't speak it fluidly. For example, I'm learning Spanish now. I really can't speak enough to converse with someone just using Spanish (I'd have to stop and carefully think about each word) but I can understand at least the gist of what someone is telling me if they said something in Spanish. So in that case, assuming the person I'm talking to knew some English, it just makes sense for us to both use our native languages.

@WruceBayne - Not out of the real of possibility that human sounds are too difficult for him to produce and apparently it's not the only species that has the same problem. Humans are more versatile but still can't speak Shyriiwook too long without losing their voice.

@WruceBayne - Also keep in mind humans aren't exactly beloved, even though the movies are human centric. They call it basic for a reason, and some other races can speak it. It's just beneath them to do so unless required usually.

It was the 70s and an era of sexual repression. Anything that dealt with whatever type of nudity was frowned upon.
Violence was totally fine but nudity? No sir.

They wanted the furry to wear pants, but Carrie Fisher not being allowed underwear because "There's no underwear in space" was okay?
