Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker left us with a lot of unanswered questions, though the introduction of a character called Ochi of Bestoon really baffled fans. The Sith assassin came completely out of nowhere, and we'd learn Luke Skywalker once teamed up with Lando Calrissian to try and find Darth Vader's Sith Wayfinder in a bid to locate Exegol, crossing paths with Ochi in the process.

This summer, Lucasfilm will release a new novel, Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith, elaborating on that mission and what Luke knew of Exegol before the planet was introduced in Episode IX

In a lengthy excerpt shared on StarWars.com, the Jedi finds himself having a vision of the planet where he's confronted by a group of mysterious wraiths. After being overcome, a Force Ghost steps in to help, but it's not Luke's old mentor Ben Kenobi; instead, it's the returning (young) Anakin Skywalker!

Here's a sneak peek at what happens:

Nine blades against one. Luke didn’t like the odds, but he braced himself nonetheless.

The wraiths attacked, nine shadow-blades held by shadow-arms cutting down at speed —

And that was when a new light appeared. Not the white flash of lightning, or the wraith blades as they were lit by the unholy light. Not the green glow of Luke’s lightsaber, illuminating the ashy ground like a green flashlight.

No, this light was pale blue. It shimmered in the air, streaking a little it swept down, throwing the attackers off in one smooth movement.

It was a lightsaber, the blade blue and strong, the hilt —

The hilt was transparent, nothing but a blue glow, held in a transparent blue hand.

Luke fell backward, onto his elbows, and gasped at the pain in his joints and also in sheer surprise at the sight before him.

Standing between himself and the wraiths was another figure—a man in flowing pale robes, his back to Luke, his head hidden under a voluminous hood. The entire figure glowed like soft electricity, bright in this world of endless night. When the lightning flashed, Luke could see the nine solid wraiths through the form of the man who stood between them and their quarry.

Luke’s mind raced as he tried to identify the spirit of the Force who had arrived to protect him.

“Ben?”

No, it wasn’t Ben… the robe, the man’s form, was —

The spectral being lifted his lightsaber, holding it high above his head, the blade parallel to the ground.

For the first time, the wraiths seemed to take note of their enemy. They backed away, nine forms huddling together, blades lowered. They were screaming from their blank bandaged faces, although Luke wasn’t sure whether it was a real sound or just an echo inside his head. It was hard to concentrate on what he was seeing, the way the Force reverberated around the figure in blue. His entire vision seemed to buckle around him.

The wraiths continued to back away, and then they vanished, their shadow-shapes evaporating into dust that spun away on the last eddy of the dying wind.

For a moment, all was still.

Then the blue figure turned around, his lightsaber extinguished.

Luke pushed himself up onto his elbows. He blinked.

It couldn’t be.

It couldn’t be.

The blue figure lifted his hood back to reveal the strong, sharp face of a young man, his gaze intense beneath a furrowed brow that was bisected by straight, vertical scar. His thick hair was shoulder-length and had a slight wave to it.

Anakin Skywalker reached out his hand.

Luke took it, and everything went white.

In a reality without the sequel trilogy this might've been cool.

@Kyos - Yeah. It's like, Anaking Force ghost came back to help Luke fight some goons, but didn't showed up again to say: "Son, what about talking with your nephew before coming close to trying to kill him?"

That would have been nice to see in the movies but nope.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority here but I'm not overly keen on how George Lucas replaced Anakin's original Force Ghost in Return of the Jedi with young Anakin. I know his logic was that Anakin spiritually died when he became Vader, but Vader redeemed himself and became Anakin again in his final moments before he died so his Ghost should've looked like he did under the armour - maybe not scarred and augmented, but old.

Still, this sequence sounds pretty cool even though I'm not overly keen on Anakin coming back as a ghost again or Force Ghosts being used as a Deus ex Machina. Sith Wraiths are an interesting concept though, ever since Episode 9 came out I've kinda wished that they did something like that with The Emperor instead of bringing him back physically.

@AC1 - You are NOT in the minority on that one. Replacing Sebastian Shaw with a young Christensen with a goofy/creepy look on his face in the SE's was a huge mistake.

Why would Luke see his father as a creepy young man rather than the old man he witnessed under the mask? It just takes you out of the moment in the very last scene of the movie. It's one of the worst changes in the Special Editions.

@AC1 - I never had TOO much of a problem with them throwing Hayden Christenson into the end of the movie. After all it was a way of tying the original trilogy to the prequels. The real problem I had was with that smirk he has. It’s not the smile of someone who went through some shit, was redeemed, and finally found peace. It looks like an arrogant, overly confident, asshole kinda smile.

@Feralwookiee - I understand that logic. Being realistic, it probably would be old Anakin who returned. But personally, I prefer the young version. Hayden is who I actually associate with Anakin, having grown up watching him in he prequels and Clone Wars. Not some random old guy knew for like 3 seconds of screentime.

@Nightwing1015 - Good point and I didn't really see it that way, but I suppose it matters if you're younger/grew up with the prequels, rather than older and having grown up with the OT.

I can tell you that old farts like me (Gen X-ers) overwhelmingly hated that change and took it as another little tarnishing of the original trilogy.

@Stinkor1 - Agreed about the smirk. I don't like the change period, but the arrogant/goofy/creepy smile is jarring compared to Sebastian Shaw's original warm/relieved smile imo.

New trilogy butchered Luke and what the rebellion accomplished. Imagine telling Star Wars fans 30 years ago that the peace barely lasted and Luke became a hermit instead of fighting along side his friends.

Aside from not uniting the original three, I think this is the second biggest missed opportunity of the sequels.

Really wish that scene at the end of TROS was not just Rey hearing some voices from the stars, but this:

Spoiler for cartoons:

It would be cool if they got some of the actors to film some of the key scenes from books and comics as shorts. Obviously impossible because of logistical and financial reasons. But i'd love to see Mark Hamill film some extra scenes. Or maybe Ewan and Ray Park film the death of Darth Maul again.

Hayden not returning as a Force Ghost in at least ONE FRAME is a huge missed opportunity.

They screwed up the Star Wars legacy and try now to fix it in novels and comics. Heh.
