STAR WARS: SQUADRONS Trailer Puts Players In The Midst Of Epic Space Battles In A Galaxy Far, Far Away

News of Star Wars: Squadrons leaked online last week, and that forced EA's hand when it came to officially revealing the game. Now, following some cool posters, we have an intense first trailer.

With that comes the news that the game will be released on the current generation of consoles this October, while reports of a multiplayer focus with a single player campaign have been confirmed. There's a lot of cool footage in this sneak peek - including a cameo from Star Wars Rebels' Hera - and it definitely looks like the space battles from the Star Wars Battlefront games.

Something that could lengthen the reportedly quite short campaign is the ability to play as both the Rebels and Empire, and that's something the synopsis and trailer definitely appear to hint at.

"Buckle up, take full control of starfighters such as the X-wing and TIE fighter, and feel the adrenaline of strategic first-person 5v5 multiplayer dogfights alongside your squadron," reads the synopsis released today to accompany the action-packed trailer below.

"In a fateful campaign set near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, learn what it means to be a pilot in a thrilling Star Wars single-player story. The New Republic fights for freedom. The Empire demands order. We need you to join the galaxy’s finest."

Star Wars: Squadrons is available October 2, 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Origin PC, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Virtual Reality on PlayStation 4 and PC with cross-play support.

So glad this is set in between the Galactic Civil Wars rather than set specifically in one of them. Gives the story so much more potential to be interesting.

I've always thought the most interesting period in Star Wars is between ROTJ and TFA. It still is as we still don't know everything that happened in that period.

@Nightwing1015 - the Mandalorian and probably the Obi-Wan series will explore that.

@Spidey91 - Yeah Mandalorian has been doing an OK job of that so far (I loved the New Republic X-Wings!). But I hope it really gets into that in season 2. Would love to see what Courscant looks like!

As for Obi-Wan, I kinda hope he just stays on Tatooine. Doesn't make much sense for him to leave and risk blowing his cover.

@Nightwing1015 - I agree, but this just seems to be set in the same timeframe as Battlefront 2 (which is kind of a shame in my opinion)

@Spidey91 - how can the obi wan series explore much of that time period when the main character dies well before that?

Spidey91 - 6/15/2020, 8:42 AM
@Origame - right. sorry, I had a brain fart :p
I was thinking about the in-between of episodes III and IV

@TheJustinHammer - Yeah technically you're right. What I mean is that I find the period between ROTJ and TFA the most interesting right now

this was kinda lame. I mean, the trailer is well made and all, but I wanted to see hot it played.
also, just put Rogue Leader on PC already you assholes.

@Spidey91 - EXACTLY! It didn’t have any actual gameplay footage and that’s kind of concerning to me.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 6/15/2020, 8:38 AM
@WruceBayne - granted, is a Star Wars dogfighting game, there isn't much left to the imagination in that aspect. still, a little snippet would've been nice.

@Spidey91 - EA Play is in 3 days.

"Tune in to EA Play on June 18, 4PM PT to watch the gameplay world premiere of STAR WARS™: Squadrons." the description.

@Nebula - ohh, I see. thanks for the heads up.

@Nebula - It better be good, I've been waiting years for a real successor to X-Wing and Tie Fighter for the PC. Most of the console games have been on-rails or arena battles. I want an open space flight-sim.

Hoped for more gameplay, because this looks like a Battlefront 2 expansion (especially considering it has the same setting).

And why is there no prequel action! I know everybody loves the originals, but this is kinda lame
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 6/15/2020, 8:47 AM
@MalseMarcel - The reason it looks so much like Battlefront 2 is it's made by the same studio. On the plus side, it's only 40 dollars! So at least it's cheaper than normal!
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 6/15/2020, 8:51 AM
@Nightwing1015 - I'm hoping that gameplay shows that EA does something new, because right now I might as well start up Starfighter Assault.

And that price is even more of an indicator to me that it might as well be a (stand-alone) expansion.

@TheJustinHammer - Most brand new games are $60. Usually when a game releases for $40 its because its not a full game's worth of content.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/15/2020, 9:21 AM
@Nightwing1015 -Being $40 isn't a good thing. Anytime games come out with that price it usually means it doesn't have a lot to it. And considering EA is known for being the most greedg developer in the industry, if they release a game at $40 it must really be bare bones.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 6/15/2020, 9:49 AM
@TheJustinHammer - While I accept that 40 dollars isn't cheap on it's own, it is comparatively cheap. Because EA have no reserves about charging 60 dollars for games with little content *cough cough* Battlefront 2015

Eh. I would be interested but it’s written by the same writer as Battlefront 2 and I was massively disappointed in that story so I don’t see myself picking this up

Ea gained some credit with fallen order, hope they don’t shyt the bed on this one

As someone who enjoyed the space fights in Battlefront 2 but felt they could've been more dynamic, I was really hoping we'd see some gameplay, especially for a game that's 4 months out. Still a sucker for Star Wars though, so needless to say:

Yawn. This feels like it is going to be in a bargain bin in 2 years. Give us Battlefront 3. EA sucks. Fallen Order was good but should have been longer. They should not have ended Battlefront 2 as a service. Giving us 2 bb units as heroes instead of Ashoka, Ventress, Windu, Padme or Cad Bane. EA are a bunch of morons.

It's no rogue squadron

Of course they can make the cinematic look pretty

Finally, a POV flying shooter! There are so few of these, SW or otherwise. I'm also happy there is a single player, and hopefully a single player skirmish mode. It wouldn't be fun if you just log in all the time and get blown away by an eight year old all the time.
