Acclaimed novelist Alan Dean Foster is currently in the midst of a royalties battle with Disney over the work he did for Lucasfilm prior to the merger, and he's not shying away from sharing some big Star Wars secrets.

In 2015's The Force Awakens, Rey and Finn were introduced, but things didn't play out for the characters as many fans expected and hoped they would.

John Boyega has been vocal when it comes to sharing his disappointment about Finn being marketed as a Jedi, only to end up being slotted into a supporting role. Many moviegoers, meanwhile, were left underwhelmed by Lucasfilm's failure to deepen the relationship between the two heroes.

According to Foster, there was a scene in his novelization which featured a direct hint about a future romance. He expected to see it addressed in The Last Jedi instead, but that never happened.

"There were a couple of things in there, and a couple of things that happened subsequently that bothered me," he explained. "I'm going to tell you one thing they made me take out because enough time has passed, I don't think it matters. There was obviously the beginnings of a relationship between John Boyega's character and Daisy Ridley's character. I expected to see that developed further in Episode VIII [The Last Jedi], and zero happened with it."

As the years passed, many fans hoped for a romance between Finn and Poe Dameron, but that also never became a reality. The Star Wars sequels were full of missed opportunities, and with no firm plan in place heading into this trilogy, it's no wonder they suffered from a lack of cohesiveness.
