Last night, we finally got a new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and the internet has been abuzz with debate and speculation ever since.

Director Rian Johnson did warn fans that if they wanted to go in knowing as little as possible about the film that they might want to skip this, and with good reason. Though things are really only hinted at as opposed to spoiled outright, we definitely get a much better idea of the plot, and there are a couple of shots in particular that have come in for some backlash because of how much they appear to give away.

Below, you'll find the 8 biggest talking points from the trailer. Have a read through and let us know what you think, and be sure to let us know if we missed anything you think is important.

8. Is Snoke Talking To Kylo... Or Rey?

The trailer opens with a shot of Kylo Ren gazing out a window and some ominous voice-over from Supreme Leader Snoke, who appears to be addressing his pupil. However, the prevailing theory seems to be that the enigmatic villain is actually speaking to Rey.

This does gel with a massive reveal at the end of the trailer (more on that later), and it makes sense that Snoke would want to harness the untapped potential of the former Jakku scavenger. Could we be looking at a similar scenario to Emperor Palpatine's plan to replace Darth Vader with Luke as his new apprentice, perhaps?

7. Luke Is Frightened Of Rey's Potential

It seems clear that Luke will agree to train Rey, as the trailer shows him accepting the lighsaber and showing her a few new moves. However, it's now also clear why he's so reluctant to take her under his wing.

“I’ve seen this raw strength only once before,” Skywalker reveals, adding that this mighty power didn't frighten him enough the first time, but does now. This is inter-cut with a shot of Luke climbing from some wreckage, all-but confirming that he's referring to his former pupil, Ben Solo, A.K.A. Kylo Ren.

6. Kylo Considers Killing General Leia

At least, that's what the trailer wants us to believe. There's a very good chance this is a fake-out, but it certainly looks as if Kylo Ren is planning on making it a twofer and taking out his own mother after putting an end of Han Solo in The Force Awakens.

“Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to,” says Kylo in voiceover, presumably to Rey. Will the dark warrior be able to take his own advice and muster the evil will to kill his mother? It's highly unlikely that this is how Leia will go out after we were promised a fitting farewell for the iconic character in the aftermath of Carrie Fisher's untimely passing, but you never know!

5. Finn Vs. Phasma

When Finn goes undercover as a First Order officer, it looks like he's going to run into someone who is only too aware of his true identity: his old boss, Captain Phasma.

The trailer gives us a terrific shot of an enraged Finn charging into battle against the still helmeted Stormtrooper, who he was planning to unceremoniously dump down a garbage shoot the last time they met. Whether Finn and Solo actually followed through with that threat or not, Phasma is very much alive, and very much seeking vengeance.

4. Who Is This Icy Little Fellow?

Star Wars The Last Jedi

The trailer also introduces us to a new alien animal species, most likely native to the planet Crait.  This ice fox...cat...thing bears a slight resemblance to the white wolves glimpsed in the recent Star Wars Rebels season 4 trailers, but there's very little chance they're one in the same.

Will these cool (no pun) little critters play a significant role in the plot, or will they be used primarily in the background? We'll have to wait and see.

3. No, Chewie Doesn't Eat The Porgs

Recent rumors suggested that the cute little Ahch-To-dwelling Porgs might actually be a food source on the island, and while that might still be the case, it certainly looks as if Chewie won't be chowing down.

The trailer features a shot of the iconic Wookiee unleashing a signature roar, which is followed by a Porg letting out a little screech of his own.

These little guys are already a divisive element of The Last Jedi and the movie hasn't even come out yet. Some see them solely as yet another excuse for mass merchandise movement, but remeber, a lot of people said the same thing about BB-8 and he proved to be one of the most popular new characters in The Force Awakens.

2. Snoke Tortures Rey

Star Wars The Last Jedi

Confirming an old rumor that Rey and Snoke would come face to face in The Last Jedi, we get a shot of the powerful Supreme Leader using his force abilities on our young hero, who looks to be in considerable pain.

If Snoke is indeed attempting to turn Rey to the dark side, there's a good chance this is simply an attempt to break her spirit and leave her more open to manipulation. Then again, at this point she may already have turned him down, and much like Palpatine's decision to kill Luke in Return of the Jedi, Snoke could be trying to end Rey for good here.

1. Rey Turns To The Dark Side(?)

Star Wars The Last Jedi

Like the Kylo/Leia stuff from earlier, there's a very good chance this is not exactly what it seems - however, there's no doubt that the trailer wants us to believe that Rey is at least toying with the idea of joining the dark side.

“I need someone to show me my place in all of this,” says a despondent Rey in the much-discussed final moment of the teaser, which is followed by a shot of her mortal enemy, Kylo Ren, extending his hand.

Is this all that it seems, or are these two separate shots cut together from completely different scenes? My guess is the latter, but one thing's for certain, it's going to be a lot of fun finding out for sure.

@LEVITIKUZ - A twist indeed.. if I had written a "10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T SEE IN THE NEW STAR WARS TRAILER" article, that is.

Upon closer inspection, the last two scenes looked spliced together. I think Rey is chilling around the fire at night with Luke to try and get him to train her or to keep training her after he's spooked by a show of her power. There's no debris falling around her like where Kylo is holding out his hand. I'm going to assume it's Leia reaching her hand out to try and get Kylo to take it and maybe he starts to. Maybe she sacrifices herself to turn Kylo around.

"The movie will not turn out the way the trailer will make you think." - Luke said it himself.

I gotta think she's a Skywalker somehow... they always seem to be the people with that "raw strength" and "untapped potential" label

Realizing Rey wasnt talking Kylo in the last scene and it's just an editing trick
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 10/10/2017, 7:12 AM
@Elayem - I'm pretty sure also Leia and Kylo is an editing trick too.

Spoiler warning:

Pretty sure the AT-AT is the final battle of the film. We see Leia at the hidden base with the gates closing. So either:
A) Kylo doesn't kill her.... like that
B) The 2 scenes have nothing to do with one another.

As Luke said, "This is not going to go the way you think"
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 10/10/2017, 7:16 AM
@LEVITIKUZ - My understanding after many rewatches it:
Rey is asking Luke to guide her and it's early in the film (she is in the outfit from the end of Ep7, and not her Jedi outfit from later in Ep8)
The Kylo/Leia isnt an editting trick and Kylo does fire on Leia, but feels regret and goes to save her and offers his hand (The background looks like a burning ship)

So you think Kylo is going to go on the ship and save Leia?

I don't see it. I don't see it because unless this happens in the middle of the film, (or Leia's death was planned) we will never see the fallout of this in the next film.
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 10/10/2017, 7:23 AM
@LEVITIKUZ - That's the thing though. Everyone at Lucasfilm has said Leia was going to be a huge part of Ep9, and Rian Johnson has said many times that Leia's role never changed in Ep8 after her death. Meaning Leia lives through all of Ep8.

@Elayem - I wonder if they're messing with us and Leia really does die in this. My god would my heart break if so

@Deonox - "Agreed, but the real question is who is reaching his hand to?"
I'd guess his mother

Maybe but I doubt it. From interviews Rian seemed sincere that Leia's role never changed in Ep8

My ideal ending to Last Jedi would be

Snoke in command
Kylo and Rey on the dark side
Leia gone
The Reaistsnce destroyed

And all that's left is just Luke
MarsivNayr
MarsivNayr - 10/10/2017, 7:25 AM
@IronGenesis - that would be epic and quite the cliffhanger to lead into episode IX. Buuuuut at the same time, that leaves a distinct amount of protagonists off the table and lots of antagonists to deal with. Sounds good but maybe not likely. What if Luke and Leia are able to turn Kylo back? What if leia’s possible death spurns Kylo to find the light again? Maybe Rey feels betrayed by Luke in some way and we end up with Luke, Ben v Snoke, Rey? Mmmmmm.... so much to speculate, I love it.
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 10/10/2017, 7:12 AM
Most interesting to me is Kylo when he says: "Let the past die. Kill it... if you have to. That's the only way to become who you are meant to be."
Who is he talking to? Rey? Himself? If himself it's strange for him to talk to himself. If Rey, does he actually train her?
MarsivNayr
MarsivNayr - 10/10/2017, 7:13 AM
I think Luke’s words held a double meaning. “This is not going to go the way you think.”
Railer
Railer - 10/10/2017, 7:17 AM
It's the opposite, the end of the Movie features a "team-up" of Luke, Rey, and BEN SOLO setting off to destroy Snoke. That is the "up-lifting" part of the ending, after all the despair of losing General Leia. It's the "balance" of the ending.
RancidBane
RancidBane - 10/10/2017, 7:27 AM
Obviously Snoke is talking to Rey.

I think that Rey is going to go off script with Luke and try to trick Kylo. This will get her tortured by Snoke and Luke will come to save the day. I'm also glad that they are using Phasma more.
IKidYouNotMan
IKidYouNotMan - 10/10/2017, 7:38 AM
What if those 'Rey is the chosen one/Anakin reincarnated" rumours were true? Gives more meaning to those Snoke lines like "truly special" and Luke's "I've seen this before..." referring to Vader. I think the films so far have made it clear that Kylo feels an enormous amount of expectation based on who he is but is annoyed because he's actually quite mediocre.

On a side note, maybe there's more to this since Hayden Christensen was at Celebration this year. Maybe he does have a role in the film as a ghost?

Theory: Rey and kylo will form there own order of the grey jedi.

Rey asks what her place is because she isnt in the darkside or the light.
DerekLake
DerekLake - 10/10/2017, 8:20 AM
My prediction is that Kylo turns good and helps Rey escape Snoke. I'm betting Kylo does try to blow up Leia's ship, but she and Poe escape.

I hope this film redeems Luke. Right now it's looking like he's just a failure, and in fact Obi-Wan and Yoda were wrong to place their faith in him to rebuild the Jedi Order.

My personal feeling about all this: I would not have as much of a problem with the central story (the Luke-Rey-Kylo one) if the Resistance-First Order context wasn't so similar to the Rebel-Empire one. It would have been much better if they kept the Knights of Ren as a sort of resurgent Sith Empire, rather than this pale imitation of the Galactic Empire with its pseudo-Vader, pseudo-Tarkin and pseudo-Palpatine. They did not need to rehash the broader story.

@DerekLake - Exactly...it was lazy writing just like what JJ did with Star Trek Deuce. Don't do it to your fans twice...or you'll suffer the box office consequences of your failure. Cover new territory.

Considering crait is the opposite of an ice planet, I doubt that that fox an ice fox thing. The last scene is definitely a clever editing trick, and so is the kylo is gonna kill leia (I think). Also, Kylos face doesnt have that mesh-thing in his face in the last scene, making me think that it could be another flashback

I firmly believe Snoke is talking to Rey.
