Star Wars: The Last Jedi has created a lot of discussion among fans of the franchise and while some love it and others hate it, there's one scene in particular which everyone has been talking about. We are, of course, referring to Luke Skywalker's showdown with Kylo Ren on Crait at the end of the sequel which saw them do battle before we learned that Luke was little more than a Force projection.

The hints were there (he looked younger and left no footprints behind) but why didn't Kylo Ren realise that his uncle was wielding the blue lightsaber which he and Rey destroyed earlier in the movie?

In a new interview, director Rian Johnson has offered an explanation for Luke's appearance in The Last Jedi's final battle and offers a convincing explanation about why
Kylo didn't realise he wasn't there.

"[Luke] is basically tailoring this projection to have maximum effect on Kylo. He knows that Kylo’s Achilles heel is his rage, and so that’s why he kind of makes himself look younger, the way Kylo would’ve last seen him in their confrontation at the temple,  and that’s why he decided to bring Kylo’s grandfather’s lightsaber down there -- the lightsaber that Kylo screamed at Rey, ‘that’s mine, that belongs to me.’" As far as Johnson's concerned, Luke believes that Anakin's lightsaber will have a much more visceral impact on the erstwhile Ben Solo than Luke's own green blade.

"We as an audience saw that... The truth is, we see the lightsaber split in half -- Kylo sees a blinding flash of light and is knocked unconscious, and then Rey takes the lightsaber away before he wakes up. So if you really want to dig into it and get an explanation, you can say that he doesn’t 100 percent know what happened to the lightsaber."

It's hard to deny that this is a very convincing explanation as to why Kylo didn't peg on to the fact that Luke was toying with him and why he didn't know that Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber had actually been destroyed. What do you guys think? Be sure to let us know your thoughts on that in the usual place.

I feel at this point hes just reading all the comments and uproar about certain elements that didnt sit well with the fans and creating a backstory to justify it after the fact, not as though he intended for it beforehand.

@Himura - Except his explanation sounds perfectly sound and plausible.

Yes that is a plausible explanation and yes it is not beyond the audiences imagination that astral projection is a Jedi skill Luke acquired while in monastic solitude at the Jedi Temple. What I would like Johnson to explain though is why the Millennium Falcon was bombed and hunted in an asteroid field, while a small resistance fleet was let run for half a movie when it could have easily been obliterated. While I'm still frothing at the mouth, I thought that flinging of the lightsabre over Luke's shoulder was totally out of character and set an offbeat time for the while of the movie.

@Chameleon - people defend pieces of s**t too much, you're probably still going to ignore the massive plotholes and obvious flaws with a film that seemingly went into production with only a first draft of the script.

@Canon108 - oh please, share these massive plot holes oh wise one. Enlighten us with your superior intellect.

@BloodyBed - There was a 40min section of the film that should've been removed entirely. Luke tries to kill Ben after sensing a tiny bit of evil, yet spared Vader after he killed thousands yet senses a tiny bit of good. Kylo looked straight at the lightsaber as it split in two yet doesn't recognize it when it's held in his face. If Holdo can convert her ship into a warp bomb wht wouldn't X-wings jump to lightspeed straight into the deathstar? If Finn and Rose were so focused on freeing the horses, why not free the slave children too? Why lead everyone on that Rey was important only to pull an anti-twist? Maz told Rey "the lightsaber was Luke's and his father's before him, now it's calling to you." The add campaign for VII had Luke saying "the force is strong in my family..." speech before highlighting Rey...TLJ was a gargantuan shit wave.

@Canon108 -

Luke wanted to turn Vader because Vader was his father. He had a hero worship of his father thinking he was killed by Darth Vader. When he found out he may be able to redeem his father he made his mission to do so. He also saw what damage the dark side could do first hand.....being scorched by lightning can do that to you....and knowing that his father turned to the dark side and helped kill millions.

Luke was by himself trying to train the new Jedi. He was not even a Jedi master. Hell he wasn't even a Jedi until the end of Return of the Jedi when he faced Vader the 2nd time. When he sensed the immense power and darkness within Kylo Ren he thought about killing Ben........but he didn't TRY to kill Ben. If you actually watched the movie you will see that from Ben's perspective Luke was trying to kill him. But Luke's story was different. He ignited his light saber thinking about stopping the evil and then chose not to, but Ben woke up and saw him holding his light saber and overreacted....hence...his dark side took control.....which is what Luke was afraid of in the first place.

Kylo Ren has a connection with Darth Vader's lightsaber. It's like a guy who grew up with his father's 57 Chevy which is lost in accident. Then when he sees a 57 Chevy like his father's it stirs up emotions and creates a connection. That is done in movies all the time.

X-Wing's don't have light speed. They have to be in the warp field of the bigger ships around them.
If you recall, the fighters in Attack of the Clones and Sith had to latch on to warp rings.

The horses that Finn and Rose saved were wild creatures and native to the planet. It is very easy to free them and let them run away. Where would the children go? Finn and Rose couldn't take the children with them and they would only slow them down. That's just common sense.

How do we know Rey isn't important? The only person who said her parents were just junkers was Kylo Ren, and he could have been lying to get her to join him. Luke himself even said he didn't sense the force this strong since Kylo Ren. That means Rey is important. She is a powerful force user.
You do realize there is an Episode 9 that will tell more of the story right?

Rey's connection to the force could have very easily been what called to her. Luke had blocked himself off from the force. Or....perhaps there IS a connection between Rey and Luke. She looks an awful lot like Padme Amidala. We don't know...but once again...it doesn't matter. She is VERY strong with the force and there is more story left to be told.

Just because you inferred something based on a trailer means nothing. There are scenes put in trailers that are not even included in movies, or alternate takes are used. This happens often. A trailer is a marketing tool and it did it's job. It got you to pay money to see the movie. The story in the MOVIE is what matters. The fact that you have your panties in a twist does not.

All that you mentioned are not plot holes. They are simply you nit picking a movie because you set your expectations in a different direction than the movie took you and that hurts your feelings.

Sorry....but it is what it is and that is a very solid movie with a very good story that takes the Star Wars universe into a very different direction and opens it up to a universe where ANYBODY may be force sensitive.

Praise the lord ... I hate when people confuse plot holes with something they just don’t agree with ... ridiculous.

I don't get why this was considered a plot hole to begin with. Was that supposed to be the only blue lightsaber in the galaxy?

@ThePhantazm - my thoughts exactly. THIS is one of the biggest plot holes? HA. Ok, Josh. Whatever you say.

I still haven't seen this movie but it looks really good to me, and I feel pretty bad for the director because it seems like he just has to deal with all this backlash
