STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG & DOLITTLE Lead The Watched at Home Top 20 List

While there won't be a box office Top 10 anytime soon, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group has gathered data on which movies are being most watched at home during this increasingly trying time.

As theaters remain shut down indefinitely, movie fans across the globe have turned to digital retailers, including Apple iTunes, Vudu, FandangoNOW, Amazon Prime and more, to get their weekly new movie fix and thankfully, studios have been increasingly more accomodating, drastically cutting the theatrical window short and bringing several top titles to digital and VOD much earlier than anticipated.

With the weekly box office Top 10 also temporarily halted, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group is introducing a brand new "Watched at Home Top 20" list of the most popular titles consumed on disc and digital (excluding outside subscription-based streaming platforms). The list will be released on a weekly basis with the most up-to-date studio and retailer data.

Along with the Top 20 launch, DEG president and CEO Amy Jo Smith shared the following statement, “As people shelter in their homes during this pandemic, millions of entertainment lovers are using digital entertainment services much more heavily than in the past. A significant number of people may even be enjoying digital for the first time. We are launching the Watched at Home Top 20 to show consumers what is new and popular, so that they can more easily make their own great entertainment choices.

For the week of April 16, here is your Top 20:

  1. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (Disney)
  2. Sonic the Hedgehog (Paramount)
  3. Dolittle (Universal)
  4. Bad Boys for Life (Sony)

The few I have watched from that list: 1917, Jumanji and Knives Out I’ve really enjoyed. Started watching Picard as well..wow!

Seen most of them and didn't drop a cent. Now, I didn't commit the initial offense, but my overt act of watching them could be considered accessory after the fact. This is why we can't do direct to stream, even though it would be way more convenient.

So glad Sonic got a success story like this. And TROS is a good fun movie but nothing much more. My brother said Doolittle was trash, surprised its getting this leadership.

There are so many things I can say about what was awful in Dolittle. I didn't think they were still making movies that bad

Look at all those films that Birds of Prey is more popular than!

1917, Onward, Knives Out, even Frozen II?!

@GwenLantern - I was honestly impressed that Onward and Frozen 2 were still that high on the rental charts considering that they’re already included for viewing on Disney+ at no extra charge.

@LordWaldo /Chewtoy - Very good points. Still surprising to see it on there.
I actually saw it at the cinema and I didn't think it was at all bad. Certainly didn't deserve all the hate, but it also wasn't so good that it would shut any haters up.
Probably on a par with Wonder Woman and Shazam. Sadly that's not saying much. DC still got a lot of catching up to do.

Other films are pretty surprising too. Call of the Wild? Is that just because there's a dog in it?

Doolittle? I don't understand that. It had a great trailer, but all you have to do is see a 3 second clip of the film to see how bad it is.

And Cats?! That's just... That's gotta be some kind of morbid fascination or something. I do not get that.

The only movie I've paid for while in lock down is The Invisible Man.

Which I enjoyed very much.

@marvel72 - They finally cracked the code after two false starts. Basically, just give Jason Blum the entire Universal Monster franchise. They've found their Kevin Feige. A cinematic universe cannot work unless you have someone in charge of it.

It makes perfect sense, too, since Blumhouse is basically the new Hammer House.

Little tidbit about the Invisible Man that I don't think anyone seems to have picked up on:

The idea of his suit being invisible was taken from the Batman: The Animated Series version of the Invisible Man Lloyd Ventrix (who was also a version of Floyd Ventris a.k.a Mirror Man).
Just like in the 2020 movie, he was stalking his wife. He was also kind of stalking his daughter.

And who played his daughter?

Why, it was Elisabeth Moss from 2020's The Invisible Man!

If sonic was released in china I have no doubt it would of pushed box office past warcraft, so as far as I'm concerned sonic is the number 1 video game movie ever.
