THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Director Taika Waititi Reportedly Plans To Direct His STAR WARS Movie Next Year

While Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars movies last month, a new report suggests Thor: Love and Thunder and The Mandalorian director Taika Waititi intends to shoot his mystery project next year.

Earlier this week, Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) revealed that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has found his next directing project in Klara and the Sun. The movie is based on Kazuo Ishiguro's New York Times bestselling novel and boasts a script by Dahvi Waller.

The sci-fi tale revolves around a robot girl called Klara who was created to help teenagers combat loneliness. In this story, she sets out to save a family of humans she lives with from heartbreak, and based on what the trade is saying, the lead role is likely to be highly sought after in Hollywood.

Here's where things get interesting, though.

The site goes on to explain that, "Waititi was weighing a number of options for his next film including his anticipated Star Wars movie at Lucasfilm. He ultimately landed on Klara and the Sun and, once a deal closes, likely would make it his next film."

Star Wars Movie Kathleen Kennedy Claims Wasn't Happening

"As for Star Wars," the trade notes, "insiders say he is still excited about the project and committed to direct that next year."

This is a little surprising (and confusing) considering the fact there was no mention of Waititi's movie at Star Wars Celebration last month. Instead, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced three new projects set in very different time periods. Those are coming our way from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, and James Mangold, with the first - starring Daisy Ridley as Rey - expected to arrive in 2025.

Does this mean we're getting two Star Wars movies that year? It's certainly possible, though we wouldn't be shocked if this one never gets off the ground (we also can't discount the possibility that whatever it is might be in the works for Disney+).

Waititi is no stranger to Star Wars after helming episodes of The Mandalorian and lending his voice to IG-11 as recently as that show's third season.

Stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for updates.

Could see it as a Disney+ exclusive. If Star Wars shows can end up there directly, I don't see why movies can't

Let me guess, the main character in it will turn into a side character in their own movie and another, mediocre unfunny side character, to be played by Waititi of course, becomes the main character who solves everything and the whole thing turns into a humourless slapstick 'comedy'. No thanks.

Is it really that hard to get people who actually know the basics of star wars?

Dude seriously looked at one of the main actors of the entire franchise and asked "you wanna be in a star wars movie?"

@Origame - you know that first part of you're comment got me thinking I wonder what a director like Kevin Smith could do in the Star Wars universe.I know it's a little outside the box and he has never directed any like that but I do know he is very knowledgeable about that universe and lore.

Disney Star Wars and Waititi deserve each other, they can both go frak themselves.

Go watch ROTJ in theaters now! Just in-case y'all haven't heard it's back with a limited release but Disney didn't promote or advertise it at all. I only knew cause of some random SW youtubers.

Star wars is already ruined. Funny how you fan girls are acting as if star wars has been any good for the last 20 years.

Not a fan of how Disney keeps recycling their own actors and directors. Just waiting for Pedro Pascal to be cast as Forge
