THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Director Taika Waititi Says He's Got "A Really Good Idea" For His STAR WARS Movie

We still have no idea what Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie is about, but the Thor: Love and Thunder director has now shared an update on his progress, and it sounds like he might be struggling!

Lucasfilm announced that Taika Waititi (Thor: Love and Thunder, Jojo Rabbit) would helm an untitled Star Wars movie last year, but updates have been practically non-existent since, and the project was only mentioned in passing during the recent Star Wars Celebration.

Even so, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy did reassure fans that the film is still in-development, and Waititi has now confirmed that he's hard at work on the script... though it sounds like he's struggling to crack the story!

While chatting to THR (via SFFGazette.com), Waititi offered an update on the mysterious movie's status.

“I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.’”

Hey, there's always room for more Han/Chewie-esque dynamics in the Galaxy Far, Far Away!

In all seriousness, Waititi's comments indicate that this film is still only in the very early stages, so we probably shouldn't expect to find out any solid plot details for quite a while.

For now, work continues on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Rey-focused movie starring Daisy Ridley, Dave Filoni's film that will tie the various TV shows together, and James Mangold's project about the dawn of the Jedi.

He's talented, but after Love and Thunder, I'm skeptical.

@UniqNo - Love and Thunder suffered from over-reliance on tech Marvel didn’t understand how to use correctly (the Volume), and a fear of reigning in their golden boy Taika’s crazier ideas.

I sincerely believe that if they’d left out 1/3 of the sillier gags, the movie would have been better off for it.

Feels like Love and Thunder was just the result of a lazy/party filled production. It was smack in the middle of COVID in Australia when Sydney was pretty lax (compared to Melbourne and elsewhere), and it looked so blatant that all these celebrities were using the excuse of the movie to fly down and party the whole time. Pretty sure that's the only reason Idris Elba showed up in the credits scene, for example, so that he could say he was down there for work. The gov was flaunting Matt Damon flying down as if he was a big part of the movie as well. Jeff Goldblum was cut from the movie but he was in the papers with Taika/Hemsworth the whole time.

All while everyone else was stuck in lockdown. Just rubbed me the wrong way that whole year.

@Kurne - The problem wasn’t the movie production, it was Australia going full authoritarian and returning to its prison colony roots.

Varg Vikerness would make a better Thor movie than Waititi. And that dude is a nazi who thinks superheroes are for queers.

I think people are way too hard on this dude because of one movie, which really wasn't even THAT bad (we're not talking Quantumania here). He's directed some excellent films, and I'm sure he will again.

@MarkCassidy - Personally, Ragnarok and Love and Thunder are two of my least favorite MCU films.

Thor: Dumb and Dumber was the worst MCU movie by far, even worse than the Ant-Man movies.

After Thor 4, he has a lot to prove before people trust him again.

This the type of guy thats just in it for the money, there was no excuse for Thor 4 except for an easy disney paycheck. Disney is a gang at this point. Exploiting all these properties for money is kinda sick.

The wacky Kiwi has long since worn out his welcome.

Though it's hard to imagine he could do anything worse to Star Wars than that last sh!tty trilogy did.

No, no, no, we say we "have an idea", it is for others to say whether that idea is a good one.

Odd of this movie happening: 20:1. Disney/Lucasfilm wants STAR WARS movie directed by TK, not a TK movie set in the SW universe.

See SOLO, ANT-MAN…Movies with good directors attached, but those same directors could not be contained in rigid boxes.

RAGNAROK worked because it featured a crazy new location, Sakaar where Taika could just go wild. It was a refreshing movie because of this.

In LOVE AND THUNDER, the entire galaxy seems to have gone Jeff Goldblum wacky, for no reason at all.

His idea of "good ideas" are just cramming hours of unnecessary cringe humor into an otherwise mediocre movie.
