WATCHMEN Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II May Reunite With Damon Lindelof For Upcoming STAR WARS Movie

Lucasfilm is currently putting plans in place for future Star Wars movies, with writer Damon Lindelof and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's mystery project thought to be among the first heading our way.

It was recently reported that it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, while the two leads will be a Black male and female. Now, we have an update from The Hot Mic's Jeff Sneider (via SFFGazette.com), and it sounds like Lindelof will be reunited with Watchmen's standout, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

While not confirming anything, the reporter strongly hinted that the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Wonder Man star is planning to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away and this feels like the natural next step for an actor who is making major waves in Hollywood.

The sequels came under fire for what many, John Boyega included, rightly felt was the abysmal handling of Finn, so the fact we're getting a movie with two diverse leads can hopefully go some way in making up for that. There's bound to be speculation about these characters being linked to others in the franchise, but a post-sequel setting doesn't have to mean that's the case.

Abdul-Mateen II also starred in Candyman, but stole the show in Watchmen as a bold new take on Dr. Manhattan. His upcoming MCU debut is also generating a lot of excitement online.

Seeing as the actor has a pre-existing relationship with Disney and Lindelof, we're definitely excited to find out what kind of character he'll play in the Star Wars franchise. Fans have a lot of questions about what became of the Galaxy after Emperor Palpatine's defeat, and we're keeping everything crossed this movie will go some way in answering them.

With any luck, Lucasfilm has a plan in place this time, though we are preparing ourselves for an assortment of stories that don't really link up in any way!

Star Wars Celebration takes place in London this April, and with cameras on this movie set to begin rolling over the summer, it could be there we finally get some news on what this project is.

Yeah, with Disney cutting as much as they are in jobs and everywhere else because they went woke and are now unprofitable (that's the saying, right?), this movie AND Ruin Johnson's trilogy are still totally for sure happening. 😂🤣😂

I just rewatched the series actually. Really well done piece of television. I feel if Alan Moore had given it a chance he might actually have enjoyed it... To bad Lindelof did a Lindelof and wrote him a sarcastic letter.

@UniqNo - Alan Moore is a stick in the mud who swore off Hollywood completely. Lindelof tried to make the guy laugh (think grumpy Tommy Lee Jones at the Globes vs the Oscars) and only gave the guy another opportunity to hate on Hollywood even more.

Moore now believes that his comics should be enjoyed as they are, rather than as storyboards for movies.

@NoAssemblyReqd - Yeah that's my point. The series isn't a direct adaption but a sequel to it with some pretty radical themes. I'd like to think he would enjoy it. Especially as it was for TV.

he’s a great actor, who was fantastic in watchmen. that show’s still gotta be my favorite cb adaptation ever. lot of potential here

@tmp3 - I love what they did with hooded justice.

The show I feel also works quite well as a sequel to Snyder's adaption, SQUID aside.

@tmp3 - @UniqNo - I actually had this epiphany about Hooded Justice while watching the show. In the original comic Hollis Mason mentions that until US entered WWII, Hooded Justice was outspoken supporter of Germany's politics. First I thought that it didn't make sense with the show's context but then I realized it made perfect sense in a very brilliant way.
Hooded Justice's main mission was to fight racist systems of time in US, so when the nation started to position itself against the nazis and take moral high horse as a society, Hooded Justice most certainly realized the hippocrazy in American rhetoric from a black man's POV. He started to point this out with a bit of sarcasm to other Minutmen. But most of them, including Hollis Mason, were under the illusion that Hooded Justice was a white man. They didn't realize just from his tone alone the he wasn't being sincere and started to view him as a genuine nazi sympathizer.
What do you guys think? Does my messy train of thought make any sense?

@tmp3 - I also thought it was great. It redeemed Lindelof for me. I see him less as a JJ Abrams acolyte and more of a creative now.

@Odin - That's one way to look at it and it's probably something that Lindelof would focus on, so that may well have been part of his reasoning behind adding those layers into the character.

Still wonder when this will be set. I like this team-up, but the setting has to interest me as well.

With Lindelof I trust he'll make it interesting though. Whether that's 1 years or 30 years later (but I prefer the former).

If JJ Abrams gets anywhere near Star Wars again, he should be shot & cremated for the good of humanity.

Disney needs to out out a statement that the Star Wars Sequels did not happen in canon and neither are the books canon that took place in this era. You would get a lot more fans back than lose, this can be done by resetting the universe through some storyline in the current 5 year stores after Return of the Jedi, maybe in Ashoka.

I honestly really liked Lindelof's Watchmen. It was brave to make the plot revolve around complicated themes like racism. I liked the new characters created (mainly Looking Glass and Sister Night) and the performances were great. Perhaps the only drawback was the characterization of Ozymandias by Jeremy Irons (very cartoonish). But it's still a 9/10 for me.

Star Wars is dead to me.

With The Mandalorian being the only exception.
