After Episode IX, would you be interested in seeing the Star Wars films move away from the Skywalker bloodline? After all, it's a very big galaxy and perhaps there's other elements of the Force and the Sith/Jedi relationship to explore- in places we've never visited before?
“I certainly foresee movies past nine. Whether or not we carry on the Skywalker saga… you know, George always intended nine movies, and whether we continue that or not is something we’re talking about right now. If the story warrants it, we’ll absolutely do it. If it actually inspires new ideas, then we’ll probably head in that direction. We just don’t know yet.”
Mark Hamill has been cryptic about whether the new trilogy will be the end of Luke's journey, going so far as to even avoid confirming whether he'll be back for Episode IX. If Rey turns out to be unrelated to anyone in the Skywalker clan and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo doesn't survive the new trilogy then the Skywalker bloodline will have run dry and suddenly the franchise will have no choice but to find a new focal point after Episode IX.
As for when they might announce what the future holds for the franchise, Kennedy advises fans, "I wouldn’t say this year, but certainly by next year."
Episode IX is scheduled to be released in 2019. Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow assumes the reins from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, however Johnson is penning the script.
