With the release of Gareth Edwards' The Creator, epic, sci-fi cinema will be back on the menu this fall.
The captivating film's final trailer demonstrates what John David Washington previously stated about Edwards' directorial style.
"Gareth has this ability to inject compassion in a sci-fi genre that usually leans on spectacle and danger," said the Tenet actor in a behind-the-scenes promo for the film.
The Creator hits North American theaters on September 29, check out the final trailer below.
The Creator is set in a future counterpart of our own, where AI robots have developed awareness and independence, sparking a protracted conflict with human forces. An ex-special forces agent is forced to make a difficult choice when given the option to put an end to the conflict or jeopardize his own principles.
Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directed the film and co-wrote the script alongside Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The legendary composer Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, Man of Steel, Dunkirk) is handling the score.
"My favorite cinema is very visually driven. It's not like a play, it's like a dream, it's just a pure emotion. This film is a melting pot of movies I grew up loving. It's a Vietnam movie, mixed with robotics and sci-fi," said Edwards in a previously released behind-the-scenes look at the film.
The film was made with a small crew and filmed at 80 different locations around the globe. This filming method, in lieu of the usual sound stage and green screen approach, allowed Edwards to make the film for a relatively tidy sum of just $86 million.
The film's SDCC panel this past July instantly catapulted it into the discussion of best sci-fi films being released this year and the promo material released since then has done nothing to dilute those high expectations. The question now is whether the film will actually meet them.
The Creator will premiere at this year's Fantastic Fest in Texas on September 26 so expect the verdict on Edwards' Rogue One follow-up to leak out just before its domestic release on the 29th.
The cast includes John David Washington as Caleb, Gemma Chan as Ava, Ken Watanabe as Professor Seki, Sturgill Simpson as The Musician, Madeleine Yuna Voyles as Young Ava, and Allison Janney as Dr. Ellen Shaw.
Amid a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war—and mankind itself.
