So far, my reviews have all been fanboy-like. Like all the films I have reviewed so far are perfect films with very limited flaws. All that changes in this one.
Let's just say the 2008 version of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (no, I didn't see the original 1951 film this was based on) is a utter piece of crap. It is not the worst movie I have ever seen (that goes the 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy') but this has to be in my top 15 worst films I've ever seen. Whether the mediocre acting, to the confusing plot, or the pedestrian effects, this film is one to forget.
The film stars Keanu Reeves (or is it Jennifer Connelly who's the star of this? I'm confused.) as the bizarre alien, Klaatu, who you don't know what on earth his plan is (he reveals it but seems to confuse you every time) while Connelly plays Dr Helen Benson (a Princeton professor) who is here to "save the day" while her son, Jacob (Jaden Smith - who I find the best actor in the film LOL) is along for the ride. Let's not get into the whole plot here (just go on Wikipedia - will serve you more) and just say that the plot is a utter confusing, lackadaisical, and pointless waste of a watch. Yes, it does get your attention in some scenes, but only to confuse you a few minutes later. As said, Jaden Smith is probably the best actor in this - and even he doesn't have a "wow factor", but at least he seemed good for the role.. while Kathy Bates (as Regina Jackson) probably would be the second best actor followed by Reaves and Connnelly (who are both somewhat disappointing acting-wise, not terrible, but certainly not great) to round out the main cast. The effects are very mediocre - some scenes are well designed while others looked like the graphic designers of the film didn't put enough into the graphics as if they were rushing on them. And again, the plot is confusing as you wonder what the heck Klaatu is up to. So yeah, the 3 main aspects of the film: Graphics, Acting, and plot were very low. While the action is not too impressive, either.
Now I know this is not a very good review, but what do you expect me to say? Just being honest - by saying that this movie is a waste of time - go plant some flowers instead - even if you don't like gardening.
