HBO has released a first look at new fantasy drama series The Nevers, which had Avengers director Joss Whedon on board as showrunner before he parted ways with the project and was replaced by screenwriter Philippa Goslett.

The trailer introduces us to some very gifted women known as "The Touched," who manifest incredible abilities as they battle dark forces in Victorian-era London, becoming "champions of the new underclass" in the process.

Though nobody is mentioning the "S" word, the show is clearly influenced by the superhero/comic book genre, with some horror elements thrown in for good measure. The League of Extraordinary Gentlewomen?

“In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the ‘Touched': people – mostly women – who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities – some charming, some very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces – to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.”

The six-episode first season of The Nevers is set to premiere this April on HBO and HBO Max. Do you guys plan on checking this one out?

Isn't this the show that Whedon invented and created and was fired from?

Can't wait to not watch it!

@KingLeonidas

Can’t tell if you won’t watch it because Whedon made the show or if you won’t watch it because he was fired haha

@KingLeonidas - So Whedon puts at least two black actors in Victorian era English tv show. More evidence of his gross, unprofessional racism. :)

@aresww3 -

i was being sarcastic.

Still, what's your point?

You can't have demonstrated racist behaviors if you have Black actors in your film?

Tell that to Mel Gibson. 😆

@Humperdink - no. of course not. i was more taking a silly shot at ray. but of course I DON"T know and it may well be that Joss is an idiot. I just noticed he had two black actors in a story about Victorian England.

I wasn't taking a hard stance either way.
