Some of our American pals and younger CBMers may not have heard of Red Dwarf. It was a cult favorite Sci-fi/Comedy series than ran for 8 seasons on BBC between 1988 and 1999. The early seasons were great - very funny, likable characters, even some drama crept in there. The later ones (last two really) were in a word, crap. The "boys from the Dwarf" returned in 2008 for a three part story called Red Dwarf: Back to Earth. This was also pretty bad. But now we are getting a brand new full series and many fans hopes are pinned on this one doing justice to the Red Dwarf legacy.

Here are Danny John-Jules (Cat) and Robert Llewellyn getting made up as their characters..

Series X will consist of six episodes, recorded in front of a studio audience in December 2011-January 2012 and aired sometime in 2012 on Dave and also on Dave HD.

I loved this show. I would catch it on PBS half an hour before Saturday Night Live. Imagine Twilight Zone or Star Trek : TNG with a comedic twist.

And now it begins.......

Dunn dunn dunn dunnnn dunnnnn

dunnn dunn dunnn.......

Its cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere,
I'm all alone, more or less.
Let me fly, far away from here,
Fun, fun, fun, In the sun, sun, sun.

I want to lie, shipwrecked and comotoase,
Drinking fresh, mango juice,
Goldfish shoals, nibbling at my toes,
Fun, fun, fun, In the sun, sun, sun,
Fun, fun, fun, In the sun, sun, sun.

I'll pack my bags and head into hyperspace
Where I'll succeed at time-warp speed
Spend my days in ultraviolet rays
Fun, fun, fun, In the sun, sun, sun.

We'll lock on course straight through the universe
You and me and the galaxy
Reach the stage where hyper-drive's engaged
Fun, fun, fun, In the sun, sun, sun,
Fun, fun, fun, In the sun, sun, sun.

I always thought it was silly (and I realize the whole thing is kinda silly but still) that Rimmer ages despite being dead! I know there is nothing they can do about the actor aging but at least write in some kind of explanation for it.

@RorMachine - I always thought the idea was silly humor where your not supposed to think about things like why does he get older if he is a hologram it was the silly humor of just ignoring things and laugh at whats happening

RedDwarf was fun...SMEG!...but it'll be interesting to see how this turns out. Though part of me wonders what could be next: Revisiting The Young Ones?

Hey RorMachine, what if they pull a new fangled Star Trek plot device and then have Chris Barrie do an Andy Serkis like performance and then ala Star Wars technical wizadry, young...er Rimmer is back and complaining at his level best!

I love the whole Red Dwarf. The best seasons were 3-5, but I enjoy every episode in the whole series. I thought Back to Earth was a nice ending (way better than leaving us with Series 8), but I'm up for more episodes.

@RorMachine I explain Rimmer's aging with the Rimmerworld episode. Kryten explains that under a lot of stress, a hologram can die. So I imagine that a hologram would be able to age under stress too.

....I think I just shat tears of joy.

Season 7 and 8 weren't my favourites. Here's how it goes:

Best Red Dwarf season: Series 6

Worst: Series 8

Good ones: Series 2, 3, and 4

Okay ones: 1, 5, and 7

This is after going through every script (I keep them on my Nook), dissecting every episodic situation, and determining how many times I still laugh while watching them for the umpteenth time.

Did I mention I own the entire series?

Oh, and I couldn't even finished Back To Earth. I don't think it was all that bad, just...not the same. :\
