Well CBM fans, it seems that J.J. Abrams is up to his old tricks again. Many know that J.J. Abrams would rather have no one know what his projects are until he is ready to launch his add campaigns. He is famously known for the amount of investment he put into his online viral campaign for Cloverfield. Before that was launched, no one had any idea what Cloverfield was, or even what the official name was going to be.

Abrams seems to be following in those footsteps with his new super secret project known only as "500 rads". Very little is known of this project, but what IS known has sparked some guesses as to what this movie will actually be.

Here are the facts:

1. Abrams, in collaboration with his company Bad Robot, are currently producing a movie known only as "500 rads." Whether this will be the final title, or if it is a temporary working title is unknown.

2. The movie will have a budget of only 25 million dollars. (Fans of Cloverfield will remember that this is the exact amount of the budget for Cloverfield.)

3. J.J. Abrams came up with the story, and originally snagged fellow Bad Robot posse member Jeff Pinkner to write the screenplay. Pinkner has since dropped off of the project due to his responsibilities to Lost. It is now unclear who will pick up the screenplay writing responsibilities, but it would not be a far reach to assume Abrams would handle it if no one else is able to step up.

4. RAD refers to the "Radiation Absorption Dose". 500 rad is the point at which the amount of absorbed radiation begins causing infertility, mutation, and death in humans. (Some sources will say infertility begins at 300 rad, however.)

5. It was reported that this movie will be in the same vein as "Cloverfield" and "28 Days Later."

6. This information was reported to slashfilm.com by "an inside, reliable source."

And now for the possibilities:

1. The Dark Tower:

Fans of the Dark Tower know that the story takes place in a world far in the future that has been ravaged by a great nuclear war. Many people, inhabitants, and animals of this world are mutated due to the radiation. Abrams also purchased the rights to make The Dark Tower movies from Stephen King. (for 19 dollars if ya kennit:) The low budget of the movie makes this highly doubtful, but you never know.

2. Cloverfield 2:

The fact that the budget is exactly the same as Cloverfield raises some interesting questions. The end of Cloverfield ended with the military dropping a nuclear bomb on New York. Could the 500 rad refer to the fallout of the bomb? The Cloverfield monster itself was some kind of mutated animal. Could it hint at the origins of the monster?? There is a fairly possible chance that this could be sequel to Cloverfield.

3. Fallout:

Fans of the video games Fallout know that "rad" have a big part to play in the story, as well as gameplay. Again, Fallout takes place in a world ravaged by nuclear war, with many inhabitants being mutated into "ghouls". Again, this might be a little unlikely due to the budget and appeal of the game. One would think that a fallout game would be announced, and not kept so secret.

4. An unnamed zombie movie: Considering the fact that 500 rad deals with the mutation of humans, it would not be very far fetched to assume that Abrams is doing his take of the zombie genre. One of the plot points involved in many zombie media deal with the outbreak being caused by radiation. Does this seem like something Abrams would do?? Abrams is known for doing new and interesting things, and lets face it, the zombie genre is a little tired these days. Its anyone's guess.

And there you have it. Everything that is known about Abrams' "500 rad." It is a whole lot of information that doesn't tell NEARLY enough. So what do you think CBM'ers?? I'm a huge J.J. Abrams fan, so personally, i'm stoked!

Veddy veddy intaresding.

Oh...and I never said this before, but...FIRST!

I just don't have any satisfaction in that... Nor do I understand why so many are pissed at those that do it either.

Yes, JJ Abrams for Superman!

It would be really cool if he did a Fallout movie, the game is awesome, and it could translate excellently to film methinks.

in the first dark tower book, the gunslinger, roland stumbles upon an old, broken down gas station. i'm pretty sure they didn't have those in the 1800's. yes, its a parallel world, but its a world that mirrors ours. The good man john farson has taken the war machines of the old people, and built an army with them. thats why he has tanks, and shit. its the broken down war vehicles and silos of the time that came before. roland's world is a world that's moved on after a great nuclear war. all technology is broken down and basically useless now. blaine the mono, they didn't have monorails in the 1800's. for lack of a better term, they nuked themselves back to the stone age, and the gunslingers and the people of midworld are what came after. the wastelands are irradiated deserts with mutated animals, due to the fallout. roland is shocked by things we take for granted, because his world has moved so far beyond, that he's never seen them except for broken down husks.

but the worlds have all started to merge together due to the beams breaking. also, time moves differently in different realities, making roland's world much older than ours.

i agree, i would like a sequel to cloverfield that's either from the perspective of the military, or some other people escaping the city during the same attack.

if you watch cloverfield, during the scene when they are the bridge, just before Clover destroys the bridge, Hud glances over and looks directly at another guy holding a cam corder and video taping everything. both cameramen look at each other briefly. the sequel could be from that other guy's perspective, and WHO KNOWS what that guy might have seen or learned. it could be a way to show some origins or something.

personally, i would like a sequel to start with a military general pulling the tape out, then the camera pans out and you see that he's briefing a military unit. i personally liked the "shaky cam" aspect, i thought cloverfield was the only movie to succeed in what they were going for with that style. so i think the sequel could be through a reporter thats attached to this military unit. just a thought :)

also, if you visited the viral sites, you can kind of piece together a very big portion of the monster's origins that are never mentioned in the movie.

yeah man, i agree. personally i REALLY want it to be cloverfield, but then again, knowing JJ it could be any of these, or NONE of these. these are just guesses that most fans have put together on sites i've visited about this :)

if you remember though, when cloverfield's first trailer popped up, there was no name attached to it. it was a nameless trailer. people were guessing anything from power rangers to voltron. lol

agreed man!!! i loved that they kept the monster under tight wraps until the movie came out. i found myself leaning forward in my seat to get any glance i could of the thing as they kept showing pieces of him, but not the whole thing!. and then when they finally showed it in that scene you described, it was just like, "HOLY SHIT!" i thought they did an amazing job with the build up of showing the monster in that. great movie!

Cloverfield 2 would be cool But i don't think it is that. Seeing is how J.J. wants Matt Reeves to direct again and hes busy with a few projects of his own. And Cloverfield was made for 30 Million not 25.

@ kingjohn

yeah i don't think it'll be any of these really. these are the guesses of the majority of fans on other sites. i'd say cloverfield would be the most likely out of those, but i think it'll probably something totally unrelated. who knows?

kick ass avatar by the way, lmao

Really? Did you even SEE cloverfield, or follow the viral storyline?

#1. The ending was not a nuclear weapon. It was never said to be a nuke, nor was there any white flash when the bombs drop. It was speculated to be several "mother of all bombs" used.

#2. The animal is not a "mutant". Nothing is said this animal was a mutant. ANYWHERE. Not in the viral story, the movie or comic book series.

let's get it right if you're going to write about it.

lol, no i've never seen one of my favorite movies...cock

1. you just said yourself, they never said what was used. but if you look around online, many people actually DO speculate that it was a nuke. i'm not just pulling that out of my ass. so that is actually decent reasoning in thinking this could be related to cloverfield.

2. actually, in the viral web sites, it insinuates that the main ingredient of Slusho is a plant that grows on the bottom of the deep ocean, and that it is highly toxic, which may have led to the creation/mutation sea creatures. the viral sites also insinuate that the monster is some kind of cross between a turtle and whale. they never say exactly WHAT or WHERE the monster came from, so at this point, anyone's guess is as good another's.

3. stop being such a miserable c*nt and find something better to do than try to pick apart bullshit on people's articles. i don't see you posting any articles, so until you do, lay the [frick] off.
