RUMOR MILL: SPIDER-MAN 3 Will Reportedly Introduce Dr. Spencer Smythe And His Robotic Spider-Slayers

Spider-Man: Far From Home ended with Peter Parker being framed for Mysterio's murder, so this rumour about the Spider-Slayers being introduced definitely adds up. Find out more details after the jump...

Spider-Man 3 is shaping up to be a busy movie, with Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange and Jamie Foxx's Electro (a character he first played in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2) already confirmed to appear. Now, a report from Murphy's Multiverse claims that Dr. Spencer Smythe and the Spider-Slayers are also expected to be part of the Marvel Studios release.

As the site points out, J. Jonah Jameson was the one who commissioned the creation of those robots in the comic books. Given his return at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it would certainly make sense for Jonah to be the one who attempts to bring Peter Parker to justice in the threequel.

It's also worth remembering that B.J. Novak played Alistair Smythe, Spencer's son, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There's no word on whether he'll return, but that would be another link to the sequel.

Whatever the case may be, Spider-Man 3 is shaping up to be a much bigger movie than we expected. There are conflicting reports about whether Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield really are returning as their respective versions of Spidey, but we'll hopefully get some more news from the trades soon.

Do you want to see the wall-crawler battle the Spider-Slayers in Spider-Man 3?

I'm looking forward to seeing JK Simmons sharing scenes with Michael Mando. Maybe Scorpion and the Slayers will be linked.

@MCUKnight11 - I like this theory...him building the scorpion suit for him, then he screws up, and decides robots are a more controllable method...

At this point, if it's not from Variety, Hollywood Reporter, or Deadline, I don't believe it.

@KWilly - Pretty much.

Well if it's true that there will be multiple Spider-Men, I guess this rumor makes sense. How this and Electro connect I have no idea, I hope they don't overstuff this movie.

@Urubrodi - BJ Novak played Smythe and Electro’s boss in TASM2. Lines up pretty well in that regard.

@GameOn - wow I really forgot that movie like when you try to remember a dream and the thing is gone from you

What's the difference between the cited source and any other "rumor mill" article? Or are we just tired of seeing RUMOR MILL plastered all over the front page?

@Himura - True, and if you go to the source, it's basically another "rumor mill" type of page: "What I Heard This Week"

Fans: “We want Kraven.”

Kevin Feige: “Here’s Jamie Foxx playing Electro again!”

Fans: “Huh? Why?”

Kevin Feige: “And Spencer Smythe!”

Fans: “Who?!”

@santoanderson - All these rumors are getting annoying at this point. I’ll believe it only when they confirm casting for specific parts, not nerd wish lists circulated as insider information.

Of all the "rumors" coming out on this film recently, I'm glad there's at least one person throwing something at a wall that doesn't sound "bad"

It’s kind of fun to look at which people are getting new books on the comics side of things to predict what will be coming to the MCU in the near future.

People who are confirmed to come to the MCU soon, and who are also receiving new books:

1. Shang-Chi
2. Taskmaster
3. Falcon & The Winter Soldier (not new characters, but it matches their status quo in the MCU)
4. Widowmakers: Red Guardian and Yelena Belova
5. USAgent
6. Eternals

I think this indicates that Taskmaster and USAgent will not be one and done villains and will stick around for a while as part of the Thunderbolts.

There are also new books that seem random, but are probably indicators for a MCU debut:

1. Werewolf by Night (Rumored to be in Moon Knight)
2. Power Pack (Rumored to be one of Feige’s priorities)
3. Juggernaut

Will be keeping an eye on future solicitations to get hints about the direction of the MCU 👀
