Sony Boss Confirms Live-Action SPIDER-VERSE Will Be Rebooted After Previous Box Office Flops

Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman has confirmed that the live-action Spider-Verse will be rebooted after Kraven the Hunter flopped, and opens up on Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga struggles.

Sony Pictures partnered with Marvel Studios in 2015 to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, starting with Captain America: Civil War. With the web-slinger's popularity on the rise, Sony decided to move forward with its own Spidey-adjacent projects, starting with Venom in 2018.

The movie bombed with fans and critics, but made $856.1 million worldwide. The sequels, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance, grossed less ($506.8 million and $478.9 million, respectively) but were still moderate hits.

Outside of the Lethal Protector, Sony found little success. Morbius made only $167.5 million, Madame Web followed with $100.5 million, and Kraven the Hunter was the biggest flop of the lot with a mere $62 million.

Shortly after the movie's release at the end of 2024, we heard that Sony had shelved all its live-action "spin-offs" to focus on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Talking on The Town with Matt Belloni, Sony CEO Tom Rothman was asked if the studio will go back to the live-action Spider-Verse, to which he responded, "Yes." When it was put to him that it would be a "fresh reboot," the executive once again replied with a brief, "Yes."

A recurring issue with the movies listed above was the involvement of producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. Depending on how Spider-Noir is received later this year, it's easy to imagine Phil Lord and Christopher Miller being tasked with hitting the reset button on the franchise.

Rothman also commented briefly on the long wait for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, noting, "The scarcity has value. You've got to make the audience miss you."

He added, "I'll just tell you this. There are two people about whom I would say this, and maybe more if I think about it, but these are two that come to the top of my mind: never bet against Jim Cameron and never bet against Kevin Feige. He knows what he's doing."

Pushed to weigh in on Marvel Studios' recent struggles, Rothman said, "They've engaged course correction. Less television. I think it was the television and the elaborateness of that interconnection that made you have to be so inside, or else you felt excluded. And that was a mandate that [Feige] was given by a prior administration at Disney."

"He's a good corporate soldier. So he did what he was asked to do," Rothman noted. "But I think he knows very well that now, a degree less will be more, and it'll be much more. Have no worries for Avengers: Doomsday, guys."

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a script by returning Spider-Man franchise writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Tom Holland plays Spider-Man in a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Zendaya (MJ), Sadie Sink, Michael Mando (The Scorpion), Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III (Tombstone), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Liza Colón-Zayas. Avengers: Doomsday star Florence Pugh is expected to reprise her Thunderbolts* role as Yelena Belova.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.

He needs to let marvel handle any planned reboots. the only success they had was miles morales. focus on miles and not spiderman's D list canon fodder.

@supermanrex - I say give Phil Lord & Chris Miller the keys tbh.

They are behind the Spider verse films and are also behind the Spider Man Noir show aswell.

If the latter turns out well then why not give them a shot?.

@supermanrex - They can't focus on Miles even if they wanted to.

@TheVisionary25 - i agree if they are indeed good. but Sony needs to stop trying to feed us Spidey's rogues gallery as hero material blocking us from great adaptions like kravens last hunt, or any kind of proper venom vs spider man story. a lot of these characters work as villains and aren't in the vain of a thanos who can carry a whole movie by themselves.

@supermanrex - I can agree with that for the most part.

It’s why I think if Spider Noir does well then we are getting other Spider Heroes & such since they can’t use Peter Parker.

NO!!!!! Do the animated Spider-Verse stuff, sure, but let Marvel Studios handle all the live action stuff.

@Razorface1 - Give them a chance!? I've given them EIGHT chances - Spiderman 3, Amazing Spiderman 2, Venom, Venom 2, Morbius, Madame Web, Venom 3 and Kraven - enough is enough.

They will use whatever the fallout of Secret Wars leaves to reboot, keeping what they think works, ditching what they think doesn't. My confidence they will get it right are low and at minimum will require them having A Spider-man in their new SPUMC audiences care about be that a new actor or an existing one (such as bringing back a variation on TAS or the original trilogy in some way) or an alt version of Spider-man (such as keeping Marvels hands off a live action Miles so they can run with that in live action).

The two things most likely to my mind is them running with a live action Miles/Spider-Gwen or going with Mayday as a legacy version from their Maguire films IF they let Disney keeping going with Peter Parker as a lead and don't try and take it back fully again. Otherwise they will wait till Tom has had his second trilogy then they will relaunch a new, fourth film version of the original character going back to his origin story again (or soon after MCU style).

Oh, and they'll probably bring back Venom again.

TheVisionary25 - 2/24/2026, 10:30 AM
@Apophis71 - most likely they go Miles imo live action then anything else.

Mayday is a possibility but slim imo.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/24/2026, 10:44 AM
@TheVisionary25 - Mayday IS the slimmer chance but if it brings back Maguire in a supporting role him being in the MCU (through incursions) and member berry appeal could be factored in to the choice. However IF they went with Mayday there is a decent chance they would ALSO have Miles in it too.

I’m not surprised with SUMC getting a reboot…

I kinda get the idea behind doing movies for Spidey supporting characters aswell as villains/anti heroes especially but barring Marvel Studios from using them was dumb so I think this apparent new route of using Spidey themed heroes moreso such as Noir or 2099 is better imo and if done well , I would honestly be more in favor of that tbh.

Also in regards to Marvel’s apparent course correction , I feel we won’t see the effects of that until at least 2028 imo since we are at the tail end of the previous mandated lineup this year with Vision Quest being the last while having other animated shows such as YFNS & X -Men 97 S3 aswell as BA S3 next year.

Anyway in regards to BND , i think enough time has passed and we should have had a trailer by now but i guess they are waiting for Project Hail Mary to attach it to which does make sense imo!!.

Honestly, if they were able to alter the deal with Disney, they could theoretically make it work. Set it in its own corner of the MCU, coordinate it, and it could be a great payday for everyone cause, as a Spidey fan first and foremost, he does have a cast that can work well with solo outings. But the trick is they work only in the wider universe. But Arad an Tolmach need to stop micromanaging and let folks who are actually fans along with being industry savvy work. Had there been just a bit more coordination, Venom could’ve worked in the MCU. Pete gets the suit from Titan, comes back with it. It’s picked up after the final battle. Boom.

They should just bring Andrew back from his NWH stint and carry on with Amazing 3. We can have two Peters, and Spidey is super popular. Then they can do Kraven's Last Hunt with Andrew, a proper Venom arc, MJ, and much more.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/24/2026, 11:23 AM
@Bucky74 - exactly. They're biggest mistake is having a Spider-Verse without a Spider-Man, and they'll probably repeat it.

I wouldn't mind a continuation of the Raimi films either though. Could work with Mayday Parker as lead. Would also set it apart from Spider-Man.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/24/2026, 11:44 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Or both. Have Peter as the older “beat up” Spidey past his prime training his daughter. I love Toby’s Spidey but I do think Andrew’s makes more sense

@Bucky74 - honestly, they could continue with both. Although maybe they should've done so right after No Way Home when the hype for both was high

They just don’t learn do they. If they were to share characters and universe with the MCU then everything would seamlessly work, quality not withstanding. Seeing Spider-Man mix it with the villains Sony seem hell bent on using would be great. Failing that just hand it all back to Marvel.
