Iman Vellani Believes Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Success Disproves Notion Of Superhero Fatigue

While it's very clear that superhero movies, in general, are not the massive box office draw they once were, every so often a blockbuster like Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes along to prove that there's still plenty of life in the genre.

You'll still see some outlets returning to the "superhero fatigue" excuse when something like Supergirl crashes and burns, but just because audiences are no longer packing the theaters for anything DC or Marvel Studios rolls out, it doesn't mean they won't show up when a marquee character like Spider-Man features in a damn good movie.

Ms. Marvel and The Marvels star Iman Vellani spoke about Brand New Day - which is already on its way to grossing $2 billion worldwide - during an appearance on Revenge of the Podcast, and she believes that the movie's box office success proves that superhero fatigue simply doesn't exist.

"People showed up on the first week," Vellani said. "Nobody really believed in superhero fatigue. Nobody really believed that this movie was going to fail and they were over [superhero movies]. They wanted it to succeed. I think we’re so used to being cynical and assuming that everything new coming out is going to suck and it’s all propaganda, or people’s attention spans are low. No, we can appreciate a good thing when we see it."

Of course, one could argue that cinemagoers don't always show up for a "good" superhero movie, but it may simply be a case of a major A-list hero like Spider-Man encouraging more people to see their film on the big screen rather than waiting for it to hit streaming.

Following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins a brand new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult and living alone after erasing himself and the memories of him from those he loves. In a New York that no longer knows his name, he has devoted himself wholeheartedly to protecting his city as Spider-Man full-time.

But as the demands on him grow, he is put under increasing pressure. This triggers an unexpected physical change that threatens his existence, while a strange wave of crime emerges - and gives rise to one of the most dangerous threats he has ever faced.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in theaters.

It's shitty movie fatigue

@Evansly - I think it’s less simple then that since arguably shitty movies have still made money.

No it does not. Spiderman is bigger than superheroes. No other hero has as much pull as him, not even Batman. The MCU and DCU are still in trouble.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Agree, Batman and Spiderman like many have said are up there with James Bond. They attract a lot of attention and interest outside a genre.

@mastakilla39 - Yeah they're in an entirely different league than everyone else. They're immune to superhero fatigue, but Brand New Day being successful doesn't disprove superhero fatigue. If the Thunderbolts released in 2019, it would've made 800 million at the box office.

Nobody screams "horror movie fatigue" when Smile 2 crashes and burns or "action movie fatigue" when "and Expendables movie doesnt do well. Only superhero movies this exists with among critics. Because comics books still have that that "you need pictures to read" stigma these movies still arent taken seriously no matter how much money they make. Its time for this disrespect to end...

@krayzeman - Do you think Smile and Expendables are actually horror and action juggernauts that are bigger than anything else or...did you use really bad comparisons?

@krayzeman - also you dont see horror movie fans wishing failure upon horror movies because politics, etc like they do in superhero and sci fi franchises right now. the critics are attacking from outside and the hardcore fan base is eating itself alive. supergirl is case and point, wasnt the greatest movie but the amount of hate and vitriol that surronded it are my point, and ironically vellanis last mcu movie the marvels suffered the same shit. an absolute golden age for nerd culture and its smeared by toxic garbage from within and outside.

@supermanrex - "[A]n absolute golden age for nerd culture and its smeared by toxic garbage from within and outside." The studios did it to themselves. We saw the vandalization of Star Wars and Star Trek not by fans, but by the studios making very bad policy and agenda choices. We saw the vandalization of Marvel Studios by Marvel Studios from 2020 to 2025 that caused Feige last year to pivot (he was very public about this). That DEI era came close to destroying the "golden age" you reference. It's mostly behind us now, and I would like to think the studios have learned their lesson.

@GeneralZod - they learned that browns and gays piss people like you off.

@supermanrex - Nah. They counted the box office receipts and learned that there are not enough victimhood-embracing dummies like you in their audience. You must have been gutted when they announced Acolyte wasnt getting a S2.

@GeneralZod - the only dumbass here is you. nah. my issues with the show were actual in universe story reasons, not being pissed off about what this alien has sex with at night. you know like normal people who watch shows.

I don’t think superhero fatigue has hit either. I think it’s a mix of bad movie fatigue and woke ideology fatigue.
