Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has Sold 45% Fewer Tickets Than Titanic And Still Outgrossed It - But How?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has sold around 75 million tickets compared to Titanic's estimated 137 million, but inflation has made all the difference. Is this good or bad news for Hollywood?

According to The New York Times, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has sold around 75 million tickets worldwide so far. With $2,408,466,178 earned, it also recently became the third-highest-grossing movie ever.

That's an impressive number, but here's an even more staggering comparison. Titanic, which has made $2,264,812,968 since 1997, sold an estimated 137 million tickets.

In other words, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached its current box office total while selling roughly 45% fewer tickets than James Cameron's blockbuster. However, thanks to the ever-increasing cost of movie tickets, Spidey's latest adventure outgrossed Titanic in raw dollars.

Ultimately, it's a perfect example of why Hollywood's box-office records don't always tell the whole story. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been the biggest movie of the summer, generating around $923 million domestically and helping propel Hollywood to its second-biggest summer box office ever. From May 1 through Labor Day, North American theaters took in approximately $4.76 billion.

That sounds like a huge victory for an industry that has spent years trying to convince audiences to return to multiplexes. However, there's a catch. Hollywood doesn't adjust its box-office records for inflation, so a dollar earned in 2026 is treated the same as a dollar earned decades ago, despite tickets becoming significantly more expensive.

While Titanic sold an estimated 137 million tickets, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has needed only around 75 million admissions to surpass it financially. The latest Spider-Man movie is therefore demonstrating just how much more revenue studios can extract from moviegoers today.

This year, domestic theaters sold an estimated 568 million tickets between January 1 and August 16, down around 30% from the same period in 2019. That's roughly 248 million missing admissions. So, the money is there, but people are not.

Audiences may be going to the movies less frequently; those who do turn up are increasingly willing to pay more for the experience (PLF screens like IMAX, for example). Merchandise like themed popcorn buckets is also becoming a money-maker for theaters.

The box office has rebounded since the pandemic, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a hit. However, these numbers suggest that there's still a reluctance among people to see a movie in a theater when they can just wait to watch it at home.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter that he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.

@Feralwookiee - Bigger question is whether "Inflation" a good measure for success? Inflation is all theoretical and cannot account for audience incentives and willingness to pay because it always changes wit the time.

-If Titanic came out today will 175 million people see it today?
-If Spiderman 4 came out in 1997 when superhero films were a joke, will 75 million people have saw it then?
-Gone with the Wind 1939 sold 202 million tickets back then and holds the record for most tickets sold in USA & Canada because in 1939 tickets were 23 cents to a dollar. Would it have held that record if tickets were 20 dollars today?

Also likely that 300+ million more Americans have large format TVs than they did when Titanic came out, so many people just wait for home releases.

The actual answer is that these sales figures are lies. These corporations are more egregious about it then ever, and it's own own fault for letting it get this far.

It is still quite impressive that the top grossed movies were directed by James Cameron. Like him or not, his movies make crazy bank.

This is why we shouldn’t consider ‘highest grossing’ when we’re trying to access the success, impact and popularity of a movie on all time terms. We should just look at tickets sold. The value of the dollar itself changes, how much studios/theaters charge per ticket changes, but what we’re really talking about is how many people wanted to see the movie. That’s just ticket sales.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/top_lifetime_gross/?area=XWW

https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/top-movie-ticket-sellers-of-all-time/

Compare the two lists and ticket sales clearly shows you more historically impactful and beloved movies than grossing does. If you look at tickets sold, there’s no movie in the top 10 after the 2000s, yet in best grossing lists there is only 12 films in the top 50 made after 2000. Gone with the wind (1939) is number 1, and the first movie made after 2000 was force awakens at 11.

There are so many factors to consider when thinking of highest grossing movie....Inflation, Tickets Sold, Population Size, Re-releases, Number of countries showing the movie, competition...etc

Gone With The Wind has 202mil sold tickets, but it's been re-released 8 times since 1939, and the US population was only 130mil in 1939 compared to 342mil now. Also, did it have competition in 1939 or was nothing else releasing that interested people.

Man, what a dumb article and no clearly that’s not good for Hollywood. I’m sure they’d rather have sold 137 million tickets for Spider-Man.

It’s not just inflation as he pointed out. IMAX, DBOX, etc means premium pricing. That’s how the theatre competes with the home theatre.

I saw it five times at the theater because of the 3D only.

I can't wait until the re-release Supergirl. Right now Spiderman has made about 20 times what Supergirl made, so Supergirl should easily be able to beat Spiderman BND at the box office like we were told would happen. I feel bad for Spiderman which will be outgrossed by a c-list character
